I’m a huge fan of one of the best shows on HBO Max – it’s a superhero series that thankfully, fans really rallied to save! Since Warner Bros. owns DC, HBO Max is the place to go for everything DC. They’ve got all the best movies and shows from the DC Universe, plus even older classics like Justice League Unlimited. It’s a DC fan’s dream!
Despite having a large selection of DC content, one of the standout superhero shows on HBO Max is Young Justice. The animated series centers on the teenage sidekicks of famous DC heroes—like Superman, Batman, and the Flash—as they mature and become heroes themselves. Although the characters in Young Justice weren’t as well-known as the main Justice League team, the show’s quality more than compensated for that.
Young Justice was a consistently excellent show across its four seasons. It’s known for its thoughtful character development, showing heroes evolve in believable and rewarding ways. The team’s strong relationships and the addition of new members kept the series engaging season after season. Plus, the show boasts a polished and dynamic animation style that made every episode visually stunning and the action sequences incredibly exciting.
Despite being a fantastic show, Young Justice didn’t receive much attention during its original run. Dedicated fans tirelessly campaigned for six years to prevent its cancellation, and thankfully, they succeeded! The show went on to deliver two more excellent seasons before ultimately ending. It’s still a highly recommended binge-watch today.
Fans Saved Young Justice After It Was Canceled In 2013
The story behind the making of Young Justice is almost as interesting as the show itself. While the first season aired on Cartoon Network in 2010, it took three more years for the second season to finish in 2013. Unfortunately, Cartoon Network canceled the series after season two, supposedly because toy sales were low. Mattel, a major financial backer of the show, likely influenced this decision.
Even though Young Justice was canceled, it developed a dedicated and enthusiastic fanbase. Immediately after the 2013 cancellation, fans launched a social media campaign using the hashtag #BringBackConnerKent (also known as Superboy) and created a petition to bring the show back, which collected over 25,000 signatures (according to the LA Times). This strong show of support eventually caught the attention of Warner Bros. and DC.
In 2019, a third season of Young Justice was created for the streaming service DC Universe. It became one of DC Universe’s most popular original shows, along with series like Titans, Doom Patrol, and Swamp Thing. When Warner Bros. shifted its focus to HBO Max, DC Universe was discontinued, but Young Justice continued with a fourth season on the new platform.
It’s no surprise that Young Justice has such a dedicated fanbase. The show is excellent and features a diverse group of DC heroes who don’t usually get the attention they deserve. Critics loved it too – the first three seasons all received incredibly high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring between 90% and 100%, though a combined score isn’t available for the fourth season.
Young Justice Is Now In A State Of Limbo After Season 4
Even though fans loved it and critics praised it, the future of Young Justice is uncertain. The show’s fourth season came out on HBO Max in 2021 and has been the latest one so far. Warner Bros. hasn’t canceled it, but there haven’t been any announcements about a new season either, leaving the show in a difficult spot.
James Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU) creates challenges for the Young Justice animated series. While Young Justice wasn’t a perfect fit with the previous DC movie universe, its animated content generally existed separately. Now, Gunn’s DCU is already developing a number of animated shows, including Creature Commandos and a Wonder Woman series. With Warner Bros. being acquired by Paramount, it’s uncertain whether Young Justice will be included as part of the official DCU canon.
Despite the show ending with season 4, there’s still a possibility of a fifth season of Young Justice. Several people involved with the show, like voice actors Zeno Robinson and Nolan North, have emphasized that it hasn’t been officially cancelled, leaving the door open for renewal. This has happened with the series before, and the show continues to have a strong and passionate fanbase, just like it did back in 2013.
