What on Earth is Going On?
- Yat Siu, the brains behind Animoca Brands, reckons the metaverse is less about VR goggles and more about an army of AI agents running the show on blockchains. Yes, you read that right.
- Apparently, these AI agents will be the new middlemen, handling everything from booking your next haircut to paying your electricity bill. All while you’re binge-watching cat videos.
- Siu’s throwing $10 million at developers to build these AI agents. Because, you know, why not? It’s not like we have enough AI already.
So, remember when everyone thought the metaverse was going to be like Ready Player One? Turns out, it might be more like The Matrix, but without the cool leather outfits. According to Yat Siu, the chairman of Animoca Brands, the future isn’t about us strapping on VR headsets and living in digital wonderlands. Nope. It’s about billions of AI agents doing all the heavy lifting while we sit back and wonder what happened to our jobs.
During his keynote at Consensus Miami 2026, Siu dropped this bombshell: the metaverse isn’t a place you go to-it’s something that comes to you. Like a pizza delivery, but with more algorithms and fewer pepperoni stains.
Animoca, once the poster child for pandemic-era metaverse dreams, has done a complete 180. Forget about spending your days in virtual worlds. The real action, Siu says, is in AI systems handling the mundane stuff of life while blockchains keep everything ticking along. It’s like having a personal assistant, but without the judgmental looks when you order takeout three nights in a row.
Siu’s vision? A world where you have dozens, maybe even hundreds, of AI agents managing your digital life. Need a dentist appointment? There’s an AI for that. Want to buy a new pair of socks? There’s an AI for that too. Blockchain, he says, will be the backbone of this “agent economy,” because apparently, machines need financial systems too. Who knew?
“It’s going to be more agents than humans,” Siu declared, predicting a mind-boggling 50 to 100 billion AI agents roaming the internet. That’s a lot of digital paperwork. And let’s be honest, it’s probably more than we can handle.
But here’s the kicker: Siu thinks this could solve crypto’s biggest problem-getting regular folks to use it. Because, let’s face it, crypto is about as user-friendly as a Rubik’s Cube in the dark. “My mom’s not going to be using MetaMask,” he said. No kidding. But AI agents? They’ll be crypto whizzes, transacting on-chain like it’s second nature.
“Blockchain technology is the ideal financial system for machines,” Siu quipped. “We, the humans, were basically the guinea pigs.” Ouch. But he’s not wrong. Maybe we were never meant to be the ones navigating this stuff. Maybe we’re just here to watch the AI take over.
So, there you have it. The future of the metaverse isn’t about us-it’s about the machines. And if Siu’s right, the next big wave of blockchain adoption won’t come from us learning to use crypto wallets. It’ll come from billions of AI agents doing the heavy lifting while we sit back and wonder what it all means. Welcome to the future. It’s a bit less glamorous than we thought, but hey, at least we’ll have more time for cat videos.
