Star Fox release date, gameplay and pre-order details

After appearing in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Fox McCloud is coming back in a new Star Fox game! Nintendo recently announced this reimagining of Star Fox 64, and we have all the latest information on when you can expect it, what the gameplay will be like, and how to pre-order.

The announcement of a new Star Fox game came as a surprise from Nintendo, but rumors first surfaced thanks to leaker NateTheHate. He originally mentioned ‘Star Fox 64 Reimagined’ for the next Nintendo Switch, along with a remake of ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.’ Now that the Star Fox game is real, the possibility of the Zelda remake seems much more probable.

But, as for old-but-new-but-old Star Fox, read on!

Can I pre-order Star Fox?

Yes, you can pre-order Star from the Nintendo eShop.

Okay, so Star Fox is coming out as a digital download and a physical copy! The only bummer is, I checked and you can’t pre-order the physical version in the UK yet. Hopefully that changes soon!

If you live in the United States, you can pre-order a physical copy from Amazon US.

Once physical copies are available for pre-order or purchase in the UK, we will update you.

Which consoles and platforms can play Star Fox?

Star Fox is only playable on Nintendo Switch 2.

You can play Star Fox on your original Nintendo Switch if someone nearby owns it on a Nintendo Switch 2 and shares their game with you using GameShare. This feature only works with local, direct connections.

Since Star Fox is made directly by Nintendo, it’s highly unlikely the game will ever be released on platforms other than Nintendo’s.

Star Fox gameplay and story details

Star Fox is a reimagining of the classic Star Fox 64 (known as Lylat Wars in some regions like the UK). It’s an action game where you fly on a fixed path through the Lylat system, and this new version features an expanded universe.

In this game, you play as Fox McCloud, a skilled pilot leading a team of mercenaries. Their mission is to stop the evil scientist Andross from causing destruction across the galaxy.

The Lylat System has many planets to discover, each with its own unique environments, levels, and obstacles.

Challenge modes let you replay each level, giving completionists and players aiming for all medals even more to do.

Besides flying the Arwing, the game also features ground battles where you control a highly agile tank.

The game isn’t limited to solo play. Battle Mode lets you join 4v4 dogfights as either Team Star Fox or Team Star Wolf, and offers a variety of different game types to choose from.

The game now supports mouse controls, thanks to the Switch 2 Joy-Cons. It also features a cooperative mode where two players can team up: one controls the ship with a Joy-Con, while the other manages the weapons with the other.

If you have a compatible webcam, you can even use the appearances of characters from Star Fox within GameChat.

Nintendo recently held a Star Fox Direct presentation on May 6, 2026, giving a detailed look at the upcoming remake. You can watch it here!

The main part of the broadcast starts at 8:20 AM, so feel free to fast-forward to that point if the video doesn’t begin there automatically.

The trailer highlights the game’s updated graphics, new ways to play, and more detailed story sequences. It ends with a short movie introducing James McCloud, Fox’s father.
