If you’re looking to play a football video game, most people immediately think of the newest Madden title – and for good reason, it’s consistently a high-quality game. While Madden dominates the football gaming world, there are still other great options available. If you’re interested in trying something new, here are five excellent football games worth exploring. They’re presented here randomly, not in any specific order.
1) NFL 2K1

Let’s start with a classic: NFL 2K1 from the year 2000. You might be surprised to see such an old game on this list, but it absolutely deserves to be here. Currently, Metacritic ranks NFL 2K1 as the highest-rated football simulation game ever, giving it a score of 97. When it came out for the Sega Dreamcast, NFL 2K1 was groundbreaking as the first console football game to offer online play, greatly enhancing the experience. Combined with incredibly responsive controls and features that still stand up today, it’s easy to see why people are still enjoying NFL 2K1 over 25 years later.
2) Legend Bowl

Released in 2021, Legend Bowl intentionally looks and feels like a classic 8- or 16-bit game. Don’t let the retro style fool you, though – it’s a surprisingly deep and engaging football simulation. It successfully blends the fast-paced action of older arcade-style football games with the realistic mechanics of modern simulations, creating a fun and immersive experience that any football fan will enjoy.
3) Axis Football 2023

Even though EA Sports has the official NFL license for video games through 2030, there are still great football games available with fictional teams and players. Axis Football 2023 is one such game, offering a realistic and detailed football simulation. It features a deep franchise mode with lots of customization, and the developers, Axis Games, are consistently adding updates and improvements since its release in September 2022. Best of all, it’s very affordable, costing just $15 on Steam.
4) Retro Bowl

Retro Bowl is a football game with simple, 8-bit graphics that first came out in 2020 for phones and tablets. It’s now available on Nintendo Switch and has become popular with players discovering its easy-to-learn gameplay. It’s reminiscent of the classic Tecmo Bowl games from the 1980s, offering a more relaxed and accessible experience compared to complex games like Madden, making it fun for all types of football fans.
5) ESPN NFL 2K5

Our final pick takes us back to 2004 with ESPN NFL 2K5, a game released for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. This was the last NFL football game to be made before EA gained exclusive rights to the Madden series. It received widespread praise from critics and won many awards. Considered one of the best football video games of all time, people still play it today, mostly through emulation since it’s no longer available on modern consoles.
