The MCU Now Has The Perfect Ending For Thor, But It Requires A Major Sacrifice

Chris Hemsworth will continue playing Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he already envisions a great way for his character to eventually conclude his story. Currently, a lot of anticipation surrounds Avengers: Doomsday, set to release in December 2026. Directed by the Russo brothers, this film is intended to wrap up the Multiverse Saga and provide a strong ending to a somewhat uneven period of storytelling for Marvel Studios. While Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom and Chris Evans’ reprise of Captain America have been major talking points, Hemsworth’s performance as Thor is also expected to be a significant part of the movie.

Now that Iron Man is gone and Captain America has retired, Thor is likely to become a central figure in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars movies. Chris Hemsworth has been with the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a long time, and there are no current plans for his character to leave. He’s hinted that Marvel has a plan for Thor’s story even after the current saga finishes in 2027. This is fantastic news for fans who love the character and have been with the MCU since the beginning. However, if Hemsworth ever decides to move on, Marvel’s Kevin Feige and his team are prepared with a suitable storyline.

Thor’s Perfect MCU Ending Is A Logan-Style Send-Off

I’ve always been fascinated by Kenneth Branagh’s work, especially his take on Thor back in 2011. It was so unique – almost Shakespearean in its language and feel! It’s been amazing to see how Marvel has developed the character since then, but the recent trailer for Avengers: Doomsday really got me excited because it seems like they’re circling back to that original, more poetic Thor. Branagh himself has said he’d love to direct Thor again, especially as the character seems to be heading towards retirement. He even mentioned Logan, that incredible film James Mangold did with Hugh Jackman, as something he’d like to emulate – a powerful, fitting send-off for a beloved hero. It’s clear he wants to give Thor a similar, memorable conclusion.

Though it hasn’t been shown on screen yet, Wolverine and Thor share key similarities – both are long-lived warriors – which could support the idea of a more personal story for Thor. The emotional core of Logan came from the relationship between Wolverine and X-23, and Marvel could achieve something similar with Thor and Love. They even have an advantage, as they have time to build a deep and meaningful connection between them. The focus on Thor becoming a father in the Avengers: Doomsday clip is a great starting point, and it also logically explains his more mature and serious attitude, as parenthood naturally brings growth.

It would be a fitting end for Thor to die a noble death alongside his child, mirroring the impactful sacrifice of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame. Considering Thor’s growth since his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such a poignant ending would feel especially meaningful.

Unfortunately, Thor’s MCU Ending Doesn’t Work In An Avengers Film

Giving Thor an ending similar to the movie Logan would be ideal, but it presents a challenge. This type of story needs careful build-up and can’t be effectively told within a larger Avengers movie, unlike how Avengers: Endgame concluded the stories of Iron Man and Captain America. Instead, Thor’s journey – from an impulsive warrior to a thoughtful father – would need its own dedicated film. Whether Marvel chooses to depict him as physically worn down, like Wolverine in Logan, is their decision.

This suggests Thor’s last solo film will focus solely on his story. While characters like Loki, Odin, and Frigga could appear, bringing in too many other heroes from the broader Marvel Universe would likely overshadow the main plot. The big question is whether Marvel is willing to take this more intimate approach for such a popular character. Although Wolverine was popular, the studio that owned the X-Men rights (Fox) never successfully built a major, interconnected event around him like Marvel did with the later Avengers movies.

Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
