As a long-time Capcom fan, I’ve always loved their amazing games. They’ve built up such a fantastic library over the years with series like Street Fighter, Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter. But honestly, I think 2026 is going to be their biggest year ever, especially with the return of Onimusha! Each of these franchises has changed and grown so much over time, trying out new things and becoming even bigger. But five years ago today, something really big happened with one of their most important series – it was a total turning point!
I’ve been a fan of Resident Evil for ages, and it’s been amazing to watch it change over the years. It started as this really creepy, slow-burn horror game with zombies and those classic fixed camera angles. But it didn’t stay there! The series has tried out so many different things – action, really messed up psychological horror, co-op shooting, even switching to first-person – but somehow, it still feels like Resident Evil. Then came Resident Evil Village in May 2021, and honestly, even for this series that’s known for being wild, it was completely off the rails… in the best way possible, of course!
Resident Evil Village Fully Embraced Its Weird Side

Early Resident Evil games were initially realistic horror experiences, but they gradually became more over-the-top. While the originals had elements like giant snakes, mutant sharks, and secret labs, Resident Evil Village really let go of any pretense of realism. It fully embraced the craziness, throwing together vampires, werewolves, monstrous creatures, a gothic castle, and even giant mutant babies into one memorable and chaotic horror game.
This game takes place in a snowy European village overrun with monsters drawn from folklore – a big change from the usual zombie enemies players expect. While werewolves hinted at a new direction, the game really surprised me with the addition of vampire lords, creepy puppets, and bizarre, gothic-inspired creatures. It reminded me a lot of Bloodborne, and at first, I wasn’t sure if this new style would work.
Honestly, as soon as I started playing, everything just clicked. What’s amazing is that even with all the changes, it still feels like a classic Resident Evil game. You’re still carefully managing your resources, exploring creepy locations, solving puzzles, and getting seriously stressed out by the monsters – it’s all there! They definitely switched things up with the creatures, but you can still feel that core Resident Evil DNA. Capcom really took a risk with this one, changing the formula while still giving fans what we wanted. And even five years later, I think it’s one of the most daring and successful games they’ve ever made.
Lady Dimitrescu Became an Instant Icon

Even before Resident Evil Village came out, Lady Dimitrescu was everywhere. Seriously, the moment they showed her, the internet went wild! Capcom definitely knew they had something special on their hands. It wasn’t just how she looked – that whole tall vampire vibe was amazing – but she really captured the feeling of the game itself, that mix of fancy and terrifying. Some of the most intense moments in the game were just walking through her castle, hearing her moving around in the halls. It was seriously creepy and unforgettable!
Lady Dimitrescu became popular because she felt like a unique villain in recent horror games. Her dramatic personality matched the over-the-top style of Resident Evil, making her both scary and surprisingly fun to watch. Compared to villains like Mr. X and Nemesis, she offered something new. Capcom’s striking design for her also helped, even though it somewhat masked the true horror of her character.
Five years after her debut, Lady Dimitrescu is still one of the most popular characters from the game. That’s quite a feat, given the series already had so many well-known villains. Capcom recognized how much fans loved her, continuing to showcase her in advertising and promotions long after the game’s release. It’s amusing to remember that Lady Dimitrescu is actually just one part of the entire game, but she and her daughters made a huge, lasting impression.
The Most Action Packed Resident Evil in Years

Compared to the intensely scary and confined atmosphere of Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village focuses more on action. You’ll find more ammo, face bigger battles, and Ethan Winters is much more powerful this time. This change actually works really well because the game keeps getting more intense. You’ll go from cautiously searching creepy houses to battling massive creatures with powerful weapons. It’s a lot like Resident Evil 4 in how it mixes moments of suspense with over-the-top action.
One of the best parts of the game is how the pace constantly changes. Each new area introduces unique gameplay and different kinds of horror. For example, the Beneviento section focuses almost entirely on psychological horror, removing most of the fighting, while later parts are full of large, action-packed battles. This variety keeps the game interesting throughout. However, the increase in action wasn’t universally loved. Some players who enjoyed the slower, more horror-focused style of Resident Evil 7 preferred that approach, while others were thrilled to see the return of more intense combat.
I believe Village works so well because it embraces its over-the-top nature and prioritizes fun. Even five years after its release, I haven’t encountered another horror game quite like it. It’s rare for a series to successfully shift from realistic survival horror to settings like vampire castles and encounters with massive monsters without losing what makes it special. Resident Evil Village stands out as one of the most daring games in the long-running Resident Evil franchise, proving that the series is still willing to try bold new things after almost three decades.
