Todd McFarlane Offers Promising Spawn Update, Confirms When Director Will Be Announced

It’s been quite some time since we last heard about the Spawn movie, but it looks like the production of the much-anticipated reboot is poised to make significant progress in the near future. The encouraging news comes directly from Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, who recently spoke with Chris Killian from ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con about the state of the long-awaited revival of Spawn. McFarlane not only shared an update on the project’s director, but also provided insights into when we can expect to discover who that director will be and his thoughts on finally seeing this Spawn project come to life on the big screen.

For seven years, I’ve been discussing this topic, but it seems like there’s always some obstacle that’s incredibly frustrating. To some degree, I understand I may have also frustrated my wife, who says, “Stop talking about it, just do it!” I think she has a point. I believe the fans feel the same way. However, I want to clarify that we are making progress. Recently, I met with a potential director, we aim to secure them, they provided me with their terms last week, and we’ve passed them on. Ideally, they will agree to join us.

If the secretive producer finalizes the agreement, it’s possible that we might not learn about it immediately. This is because there are still two significant achievements in the movie project that McFarlane wishes to accomplish first before disclosing any further details.

McFarlane explained that instead of revealing when a specific person signs on to the project, they will announce the news once they have both the script and a buyer. Unlike in previous instances where he publicly announced every new hire, this time they plan to simply state that the script has sold with a director, writer, and selected actors attached, without providing further details until production begins. He added that the contract for the A-list director was recently sent out and expressed his surprise at their continued luck with Spawn, as those who are excited about it are top-tier individuals from his perspective.

McFarlane also shared that Blumhouse is fully supportive of the project and eager to bring it to life on-screen. “I’m hoping he’s interested in creating something spooky,” McFarlane said, adding humor. “In a month or so, I should meet with him, after which we’ll send the script over for potential approval. We’re keeping our fingers crossed and working hard to advance this project. It’s always moving forward, and Blumhouse is just as determined as I am to make it happen.

The Status of King Spawn

One significant change in the project you’re referring to is the working name, originally “King Spawn,” which was disclosed prior to last year’s San Diego Comic-Con. Despite sharing a moniker with the “King Spawn” comic series, McFarlane clarified that it wouldn’t be adapted from that source material. The main objective was to distinguish it from the initial film, and there’s a chance

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but express my thoughts on the tentative title of an upcoming movie. It strikes me as more than just a placeholder; it’s bold and powerful. However, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane mentioned that this might not be the final title, as they wanted to avoid giving the impression that this is simply a reboot or repetition of the original from decades ago. Instead, they aim to convey that their version is unique and distinct from the past. So, while we wait for the official title, let’s appreciate the creative spirit behind this intriguing choice!
