Grey’s Anatomy Finale Reveals Major Milestone For Meredith Grey

It’s not a Post-It, but it’ll do.

Good news for viewers: the season 22 finale of Grey’s Anatomy didn’t kill off any main characters, even though Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd are leaving the show.

Ellen Pompeo’s character, Dr. Meredith Grey, made a surprisingly bold move – she made a decision based on what she truly wanted, rather than on logic or circumstance.

The episode opens by revealing that Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) was also involved in the bridge collapse that affected Owen (McKidd).

During a tense situation in the emergency room, Meredith tells Dr. Cass Beckman (Sophia Bush) that Nick is her husband. Nick jokingly teases her about it, adding a lighthearted moment to the scene.

I was completely stunned when Nick asked me, “I’m your husband?” Honestly, it was the last thing I expected him to say, and my immediate reaction was, “Seriously? That’s what you’re concentrating on right now?” It just felt like such a bizarre thing to fixate on in that moment.

It’s heartbreaking to watch Meredith go through this again. Her boyfriend, the man she’s loved for four years, is facing a life-or-death situation and needs surgery now. It’s bringing back so much pain, because it reminds her of losing Derek. My heart breaks for her, especially since Amelia pointed out the trauma of losing Derek to surgeons who weren’t up to the task. It’s like history is repeating itself, and Meredith is terrified of losing someone she loves all over again.

Meredith persuades Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) to let her perform surgery on Nick, despite being prohibited by the hospital’s review board, because she believes Meredith is the only surgeon she can trust.

After Nick recovers from surgery, Meredith does something she swore she wouldn’t.

“Marry me,” she asked Nick, to which he joked, “How badlly was I hurt?”

Meredith responded, saying she had just enough energy to dwell on everyone she’d lost, and she didn’t want to lose this person too.

She realized that being unmarried hadn’t shielded her from life’s difficulties, and she confessed her love for him and their life together. She didn’t want her fears to ruin what they had anymore.

Even though Meredith doesn’t want a typical wedding, Nick happily accepted her proposal.

Nick playfully questioned her, bringing up a surgery Meredith did years ago. Then, with a smile, he confessed, “I’ve been wanting to marry you ever since I was last here.”

Okay, seriously, this scene just destroyed me. For seasons, we’ve all known Nick was head-over-heels for Meredith, practically begging to marry her! And Meredith? She’s always been so focused on her own thing – being a brilliant doctor, raising her kids, staying independent. It felt like she was deliberately keeping him at arm’s length. So seeing this moment, where it feels like she might actually be ready to let him in… it’s everything! I’ve been shipping them forever, and it’s so touching to see him finally getting a real chance with her.

In fact, during season 20, Meredith turned down Nick when he brought up the idea of marriage.

In the ninth episode of the season, she confessed to him, “I’m not sure I can get married again. I’ve been through that before, and it’s scary to think about. But I love you very much.”

Meredith and Nick weren’t the only couple finding happiness at the end of the season. Owen and Teddy also made a big decision: they’re moving to Paris together! After Owen heroically saved a family from the bridge collapse, he gave Teddy his full support for her new job and announced he’d be joining her in Paris.

In a recent interview with TopMob News, McKidd described Owen’s character arc as showing significant growth. He explained that Owen’s final moments involved him encouraging another character to pursue their dreams, while also expressing unwavering support and a desire to remain a part of their life.

As he put it, “It feels right.”

The first episode of Grey’s Anatomy started with a surprise for new intern Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo): she discovered that the attractive man she’d spent the night with—played by Patrick Dempsey—was actually her new boss, the famous Dr. Derek Shepherd. Talk about an awkward beginning!

Viewers were just as shocked as Meredith in the first season finale when Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) unexpectedly arrived at Seattle Grace and confronted her and Derek with the famous line, “You must be the woman who’s been having an affair with my husband.”

During its second season, Grey’s Anatomy aired a dramatic scene after the Super Bowl where Meredith made the risky decision to put her hand inside a patient to prevent a live explosive from going off. Just when viewers started to relax as Dylan, a bomb squad chief played by Kyle Chandler, carried the explosive away, it detonated, tragically injuring him.

Viewers became invested in the romance between Izzie (Katherine Heigl) and Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) as he waited for a heart transplant during the second half of season two, rooting for them to find happiness. However, when Izzie’s desperate attempt to get him a heart faster tragically backfired and he died in the season finale, it became clear that Grey’s Anatomy wasn’t afraid to break hearts and didn’t guarantee happy endings.

Season three’s dramatic ferry accident featured two shocking moments: Meredith being thrown into the icy water and almost drowning, and her later confession that she had actually stopped fighting to stay alive. Which of these was more surprising?

At the start of season three, Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) joined Seattle Grace as an intern. Her arrival echoed how Derek first met Meredith – they had a chance encounter the night before she started – but thankfully, things didn’t progress beyond a first meeting! Lexie quickly introduced herself to George O’Malley and revealed her family connection: she’s Meredith’s younger half-sister, one of two daughters raised by their father, Thatcher, and his second wife, Susan.

Over two and a half seasons after his character died, Denny unexpectedly reappeared as a ghost—and had a romantic encounter with Izzie. This bizarre scene wasn’t just shock value; it was a way to subtly hint to both Izzie and the audience that she was seriously ill. It was later revealed she had advanced melanoma, stage IV, which had spread to her brain and other areas.

Everyone thought Izzie was going to die in the season five finale, but George’s mysterious disappearance should have been a warning sign. When Meredith recognized the handwriting of the unidentified patient hit by a bus – it was ‘007,’ George’s old nickname – she desperately tried to tell the surgeons, but they couldn’t save him. He died on the operating table.

One of the most shocking moments in Grey’s Anatomy history happened in the season six finale. A grieving widower, fueled by loss and arriving after the hospital merged with Mercy West, came to the hospital with a gun. The result was devastating: several doctors were killed or wounded. The scene of Bailey being dragged from under a bed remains incredibly disturbing, though thankfully she survived. Sadly, Meredith and Derek’s baby didn’t make it; Meredith believed Derek had died and tragically miscarried after he was shot.

Just two seasons after a devastating shooting at the hospital, Shonda Rhimes created another major crisis for her doctors. In the season eight finale, a plane carrying Meredith, Derek, Cristina Yang, Lexie, Mark Sloan, and Arizona Robbins crashed while they were traveling to Boise, Idaho for a surgery. They were left stranded and injured, and no one knew where they were. Sadly, Mark and Lexie died in the crash, Arizona lost a leg, and Derek almost permanently lost the use of his hand.

When Sandra Oh decided to leave Grey’s Anatomy after season 10, the show found a surprising way to give her character, Cristina Yang, a send-off. They brought back Isaiah Washington as Preston Burke – the man who left her at the altar years earlier – and had him offer her ownership of his hospital in Switzerland. The return of Washington was particularly shocking, considering he had been fired from the show after using a hateful slur against co-star T.R. Knight.

The season 10 finale of the show saw Cristina leave and Dr. Maggie Pierce, played by Kelly McCreary, join as the new head of cardio-thoracic surgery. In a surprising twist at the end of the episode, Maggie revealed to Richard (James Pickens Jr.) that she was the daughter of the famous Dr. Ellis Grey. Richard wasn’t the only one shocked by this news – everyone learned that he had another daughter, and Meredith gained a new sister.

Everyone was shocked when Derek unexpectedly died near the end of season 11. He had just saved a family from a car accident when he was fatally injured in a collision. It was particularly surprising because Patrick Dempsey had recently renewed his contract, and the decision to kill off Derek – Meredith’s husband – seemed to be Shonda Rhimes’ only way to end the character’s story without invalidating their eleven-year relationship, though it was still a painful loss for fans.

Mer had already faced a lot, but episode nine of season twelve brought another trauma: a violent attack by a patient that broke her jaw, requiring surgery and leaving her temporarily unable to speak. A particularly powerful scene featured Ellen Pompeo portraying Mer’s intense panic when her children were unable to visit her while she recovered.

The show addressed Alex Karev’s unexpected departure after Justin Chambers left mid-season 16 by revealing he’d reconnected with his ex-wife, Izzie, years after she disappeared and filed for divorce. He discovered she’d been secretly raising their twins on a farm, and he chose to be with them instead of continuing his life in Seattle. It was a completely shocking twist that no one predicted.

As a longtime follower of Grey’s Anatomy, I was truly saddened by what happened to Dr. Andrea ‘Andrew’ DeLuca (played by Giacomo Gianniotti). It was so inspiring to watch him work through personal challenges and finally become an attending at Grey Sloan Memorial. But, as we’ve come to expect from this show, just when things were looking up, tragedy struck. He was tragically attacked and killed by someone connected to a human trafficking operation. It was a heartbreaking moment for viewers, and a reminder of the show’s tendency to pull at your heartstrings.
