Man, I remember growing up in the 80s and 90s when Sega was really going after Nintendo and then Sony – it was a total console war! Sadly, Sega lost out in the end, and the Dreamcast was their last attempt. But honestly, the Dreamcast was way ahead of its time. It had built-in online play and some seriously awesome games. It just didn’t sell enough, so Sega decided to stop making consoles and focus on making games instead. Still, that Dreamcast library was amazing. I dug up the sales numbers and put together a list of the 10 best-selling Dreamcast games, ranked from lowest to highest sales.
10) NBA 2K

The popular NBA 2K series is still going strong, with NBA 2K26 being the latest installment as of late 2025. It all started in 1999 with the first NBA 2K game for the Sega Dreamcast, which featured Allen Iverson on the cover. Critics and players alike praised the game’s various modes, customization options, and smooth gameplay. It was a commercial success, laying the foundation for the long-running franchise that continues to release new versions on different gaming consoles. To date, the series has sold over 1.028 million copies.
9) NFL 2K1

Okay, so Sega’s NFL 2K games never quite hit the same heights as their NBA 2K series – probably because of Madden being so dominant. But when the first one dropped on the Dreamcast, it was a big deal! NFL 2K1, released in 2000, is number nine on my list. It came out pretty late in the Dreamcast’s life, which was a bummer because a lot of the online SegaNet stuff wasn’t working anymore. But honestly, the critics loved it. It still has a 97 on Metacritic, which is seriously impressive. And it sold over a million copies – 1,072,972 to be exact, which shows people were definitely into it.
8) Sonic Adventure 2

As a huge Sonic fan, I always loved how the Dreamcast had a bunch of Sonic games, and Sonic Adventure 2 was definitely one of the most popular! What was so cool about it was that it told two different stories at the same time – you had Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles trying to be heroes, and then Shadow, Dr. Eggman, and Rouge trying to cause trouble. It was the last Sonic game Sega ever made for their own console, which is kind of sad since it came out right before they stopped making the Dreamcast. Critics really liked it, and we actually ranked it 19th in our list of all the Sonic games. Plus, over a million copies sold – over 1,080,782, to be exact – which is amazing considering how late in the Dreamcast’s life it came out!
7) The House of the Dead 2

Originally an arcade game, The House of the Dead 2 came to the Dreamcast in 1999 and later to other consoles and PCs. As a Sega title, the Dreamcast was its first home. This sequel continues the story from The House of the Dead, taking place a year after the original game. Players used the Dreamcast Light Gun to experience this rail shooter on their TVs, and the Dreamcast version sold over 1.1 million copies.
6) Shenmue

Released in 1999 for the Dreamcast, Shenmue is an action-adventure game that kicked off a short-lived series. The game centers around a quest for revenge in Japan and was groundbreaking for its large, open world, fighting, and fast-paced action sequences. While critically acclaimed upon release, Shenmue didn’t sell well. Despite this, a sequel, Shenmue II, came out in 2001, and a third game finally arrived in 2019. The series has gained a dedicated fanbase and remains highly regarded, even though the original game sold 1,255,361 copies and didn’t earn back its development costs.
5) NFL 2K

The original NFL 2K game for Dreamcast was the most popular in the series. Released in 1999 as one of the console’s first games, it received near-perfect reviews. Critics loved its graphics, responsive controls, and realistic football gameplay. Many at the time felt it was more fun to play than Madden, even though Madden had better technology. Looking back, it’s clear only one of those game series is still released every year. Despite that, NFL 2K sold very well, with over 1.2 million copies purchased.
4) Crazy Taxi

Sega first launched Crazy Taxi as an arcade game, and it quickly became popular. The game soon came to the Dreamcast, where it was a major success and one of the console’s most beloved titles. Sega later released versions for PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, but the Dreamcast version remained the most popular, even getting a sequel. Critics particularly loved the Dreamcast version, giving it a 90% score on GameRankings, compared to 79% for the PS2 version. Worldwide, Crazy Taxi has sold over 1.27 million copies.
3) Soulcalibur

Many people think Soulcalibur was the first game in the series, but it was actually the second. The original was Soul Edge. However, Soulcalibur was a huge success, especially on the Dreamcast. Namco first released the game in arcades, then brought it to the Dreamcast in 1999 with improved graphics and new features designed for the system. It quickly became a must-have game and a major reason why people purchased a Dreamcast. While the precise numbers are unknown, Soulcalibur sold over 1.3 million copies.
2) Resident Evil – Code: Veronica

Originally, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica was the first game in the series released on a console other than PlayStation, appearing on the Dreamcast in 2000. The story picks up three months after Resident Evil 2 and happens at the same time as Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Critics loved the game, and it sold well for the Dreamcast. However, it didn’t sell as many copies as other Resident Evil titles, which made Capcom rethink its decision to move away from PlayStation. They later released an updated version, Code: Veronica X, for the PlayStation 2 to reach a wider audience. Despite this, Resident Evil – Code: Veronica still managed to sell 1,356,362 copies on the Dreamcast.
1) Sonic Adventure

Given that the Dreamcast was made by Sega, it’s no surprise that the best-selling game for the console is a Sonic title. Sonic Adventure, released in 1998, was the first game in the series to feature 3D graphics and gameplay. Players can control one of six characters – Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big the Cat, and E-102 Gamma – each with special abilities, as they work to collect the Chaos Emeralds. The game was highly praised by critics and is ranked #6 on our list of all Sonic games. It also sold over 2.6 million copies, making it the Dreamcast’s best-selling game.
