WRC 2027 Announced, Being Developed by New Studio Grit Games

As a huge rally fan, I was so excited to hear that Nacon finally confirmed a new WRC game is in development! They announced a while back they had the license, but now we know it’s actually happening at studio Grit Games. The game is called WRC 2027, and they just dropped a video showing it off – you can check it out below. I can’t wait!

The video doesn’t show much of the gameplay, but it does offer a glimpse of the team at Grit Games who are developing WRC 2027. We see 12 team members excited to start a new night race.

Nacon has launched a new studio called Grit Games, headed by four experienced developers – Hardouin Pouzet, Alexandre Assier, Laura Gayet, and Pierre-Nicolas Moreau – who all have a history of making racing games. The studio is expanding quickly, staffed by people who are passionate about the genre. Nacon has also regained the rights to the WRC series and is giving Grit Games the opportunity to create a fresh take on the franchise, starting in 2027 and continuing through 2032.

Although details are still scarce, the title WRC 2027 suggests Grit Games plans to launch the game either in late 2026 or sometime in 2027. It’s currently unclear whether future installments will be released annually or if the team will focus on providing ongoing support for a single game over a longer period.

The most recent WRC racing game is EA Sports WRC, released in 2023 and created by Codemasters. We gave it an 8/10 score in our review, praising its accessibility, challenging gameplay, distinct driving experience for each car, and realistic tracks and weather.

The game proved successful enough for EA to commit to ongoing updates throughout 2024, including new cars and a variety of fresh tracks.

Nacon obtained the rights to create WRC games last May, and many expected KT Racing to continue developing the series. Nacon stated that their new WRC game would be a complete reimagining, built with a completely new approach.

Nacon CEO Alain Falc expressed excitement about continuing their partnership with WRC Promoter. He stated that the official license allows them to create a realistic and satisfying driving experience for rally fans. Nacon previously worked closely with official rally teams and drivers from 2015 to 2023, giving them valuable knowledge in creating rally video games. This renewed collaboration represents a fresh start with a dedicated team, and Nacon aims to significantly improve the quality of rally games.

As a big rally fan, I remember WRC Generations from 2022 being the last game Nacon made with the official license. Kylotonn developed it, and it was cool because they added hybrid cars for the first time and a really fun Leagues mode where you could compete against other players.
