Tom Cruise is known for his fantastic sci-fi films, including titles like Minority Report, War of the Worlds, and Oblivion. However, many fans consider 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow to be his best in the genre. The movie cleverly combines the concepts of Groundhog Day and Aliens, and was widely praised for its originality, exciting action, and strong performances. While it didn’t become a blockbuster in theaters – earning $381 million globally on a $178 million budget – Edge of Tomorrow has gained a dedicated following eager for a sequel. Unfortunately, recent news suggests that sequel may not happen.
As a huge fan of Edge of Tomorrow, I was disappointed to read on Collider that a sequel isn’t currently being worked on. Apparently, Warner Bros. hasn’t completely given up on it, and they’d still like to make it someday. So, it’s kind of stuck in limbo – not dead, but definitely not moving forward at the moment. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but at least there’s a tiny glimmer of hope!
Should Edge of Tomorrow 2 Still Happen?

It’s easy to see why people are hoping for a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, but it might be best to leave the 2014 film as it is. The story wraps up nicely – the alien threat is defeated, so there aren’t any loose ends that need to be tied up. While they could introduce a new alien invasion for Cage and Rita to fight, that would ironically risk feeling like a rehash of the first movie. Edge of Tomorrow was so good because it felt original and thrilling, and a sequel that simply repeats the same ideas would be a letdown.
Emily Blunt previously loved the script for a potential Edge of Tomorrow 2, but she said it would have only worked if they’d filmed it around eight years ago—back in 2023. While she and Tom Cruise aren’t old, she acknowledged that time has passed, and he was still doing impressive stunts for Mission: Impossible recently. It seems if the sequel ever happens, the story will likely need to be updated to account for the actors’ current ages and find a fresh approach.
I really want to see another Edge of Tomorrow movie, but it’s complicated. Just because a film doesn’t do well in theaters doesn’t mean it won’t find an audience later on – we’ve seen that with streaming. Still, there’s no guarantee it would be a huge success. Tom Cruise is still a big name, of course, but his films haven’t consistently been massive hits like they were back in the 80s and 90s, unless it’s something like Mission: Impossible or Top Gun. And to make things even more uncertain, Warner Bros. is being bought by Paramount right now. That means Paramount will likely decide if the sequel actually gets made, and if they don’t see it as a good investment, the whole project could be cancelled. It’s a little nerve-wracking as a fan!
Tom Cruise’s existing relationship with Paramount, especially with a third Top Gun movie in the works, could help get Edge of Tomorrow 2 made. However, a sequel should only happen if they have a compelling story and a great script. If not, it’s probably best to leave the original Edge of Tomorrow as a standalone film. While it’s a fantastic sci-fi action movie, not every story needs a sequel, and sometimes it’s better to simply conclude a story well.
