As a child of the ’90s, Happy Gilmore holds a special place in my heart. It might just be the most significant film from Adam Sandler’s repertoire. The dialogue is witty, the charm is infectious, and Happy, with his volatile nature yet underlying kindness, makes for an intriguing protagonist. He may be fiery, but deep down, he’s got a heart of gold that’s easy to cheer for.
The humor in this movie is consistently hilarious. The fight with Bob Barker, the scene at Happy Place…most of it hits the mark. Granted, the sequel isn’t as consistent, but let’s face it, many legacy comedy sequels can be much worse than Happy Gilmore 2, as we’ve seen with Dumb and Dumber To and Zoolander 2.
The following are five hilarious jokes from the movie. While not ranked, each one is nearly as amusing as any joke in the original film. A word of caution: Spoilers for Happy Gilmore 2 lie ahead.
1) The Mailbox
At the start of the movie, we get a brief overview of Happy’s life over the past two decades. He’s created a video game based on his adventures, has five children with Julie Bowen’s character Virginia Venit, and generally leads a contented life. However, things take a tragic turn when one of his swings accidentally strikes Virginia, resulting in her death.
This surprising turn of events leads him to excessive drinking, assaulting a repossession agent, getting sued, ultimately losing his beloved grandmother’s house. As they are packing up and leaving, he bids farewell to one of his neighbors, meticulously tending to their immaculate lawn. This scene then transitions to him being acknowledged by Steve Buscemi, who is watering the inside of a mailbox with urine.
2) “We’re Not Scientists”
In the first film, Happy Gilmore features Ben Stiller as a harsh elderly caregiver. In the sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, he takes on the role of a stern leader of a recovery group named H.A.L., or Healing Alkies for Life, which is similar to Alcoholics Anonymous.
Following their reunion, he ascends to the stage and presents the fresh recruit to the gathering. Happy delivers his customary greeting, “Hello, I’m Happy Gilmore, and I’m… well, let’s just say I have a problem with alcohol,” to which Hal responds, “Ah, we don’t use ‘alcoholic,’ we’re not doctors or researchers. We’re ordinary folks, struggling to make ends meet. In our circle, we refer to it as being an ‘alkie.’ That exchange is one of the film’s most memorable dialogue moments, with Hal’s comment about not being scientists and his suggestion of ‘alkie’ being more respectful than ‘alcoholic.’
3) “This Guy Is Losin’ It”
In our initial encounter again, Shooter McGavin appears at a parole hearing; he’s been confined for 29 years in an institution due to numerous criminal activities that took place during the original movie. Upon mentioning Gilmore’s name, his composed facade vanishes almost instantly. Later on, we meet him once more, immediately following his name being brought up at a professional golf club where Happy dines with figures such as Jack Nicklaus.
Switching to McGavin, we find him cozied up in his cell, engrossed in Stephen King’s The Shining. He chuckles and murmurs under his breath, “What an unstable fellow!” – Such a comical display of obliviousness.
4) Eminem’s Cameo
One intriguing aspect showcased in the preview for Happy Gilmore 2 was the appearance of Eminem. Not only was this a cameo by Eminem, but the character he portrayed was immediately recognizable.
In the reimagined scenario, it’s Eminem’s son who takes on the role of Joe Flaherty’s iconic “Jackass” screamer from the original film. He wears the same attire and utters the same exclamation. However, in this version, instead of being run off as in the original, Eminem’s son yells “Jackass!” only to be confronted by Happy, whose boys then brutally attack him. Subsequently, they toss him into a lake inhabited by alligators who proceed to viciously attack him like a toy. Remarkably, Donald Jr. claims he remains unfazed by the ordeal, stating that he doesn’t mind what’s happening to him at that moment.
5) Every Moment with Bad Bunny
Bad Bunny, also known as Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is the standout performer in the upcoming movie “Happy Gilmore 2”. Previously appearing in films like “F9” and “Bullet Train”, he seizes the opportunity to shine brightly in this production, playing the role of Oscar, Happy’s caddy.
The rapper skillfully infuses Oscar with an endearing innocence and enthusiasm that feels real, and surprisingly, this innocence is consistently funny rather than annoying. His decision to have his cousin serve as his caddy (essentially making his cousin the caddy of a caddy) might seem unusual, but it’s accepted humorously instead of being a distraction. When he steps into a batting cage and catches a ball in his teeth, we see a self-conscious yet determined character gradually gaining confidence. Bad Bunny was an excellent fit for the movie, as he demonstrated during Saturday Night Live, he can deliver lines perfectly and act with just his facial expressions and body language.
