The sequel to Mortal Kombat doesn’t hold back when it comes to eliminating characters. It goes beyond just killing off minor enemies and unexpectedly takes out major heroes and villains alike. In total, the film kills nine characters (with one appearing twice), resurrects three of them (though only one of those who died), and almost defeats a god. As Sonya Blade points out, it is called Mortal Kombat, so a high body count shouldn’t be surprising.
According to writer Jeremy Slater, death isn’t permanent in the world of Mortal Kombat. He decided to bring back fan favorites Kano and Kung Lao – he loved Kano in the first movie and thought Kung Lao’s hat was too iconic to leave behind. The movie explains these returns with a new character, the necromancer Quan Chi, and introduces zombie-like Revenants, meaning anyone could potentially be resurrected. The next movie, Mortal Kombat 3, will follow the surviving heroes as they venture into the Netherrealm to rescue those who were lost, but there’s a twist – not everyone might make it back.
Why Cole Young Probably Won’t Be Back in Mortal Kombat II (Unless a Rule Changes)

Early in Mortal Kombat II, the film suggests that a body’s condition affects how someone returns to life – we see this when Kano is resurrected without an eye. Quan Chi’s magic needs the corpse to work, and it can’t fix anything that’s missing. Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) later confirms this, threatening to destroy Kitana’s (Adeline Rudolph) mother’s remains, preventing any future resurrection. This is especially concerning for Lewis Tan’s character, Cole Young, who suffers what many consider the most brutal hero death in the movie.
Following a mixed reaction to the character in the first film, Young has a much smaller role in the sequel, appearing briefly before his fight with Shao Kahn. In the famous Deadpool stage, Young fights bravely, but Kahn ultimately kills him with a devastating hammer blow, completely destroying his head. All that remains is a greasy mark, and to make things worse, Kahn throws Young’s body into the acid pool beside the arena. This means Quan Chi has no way to resurrect him, as there’s nothing left to bring back.
It’s possible the writer, Slater, could bring Cole Young back to life, even after his death. Previous films, like MK II and the upcoming Mortal Kombat 3, have shown characters appearing as they were in life when visiting the afterlife, so the rules aren’t set in stone. Slater has said he’s focused on finding surprising and compelling ways to bring characters back, using their deaths as a springboard for new stories and journeys. Essentially, he has creative control. However, the bigger question is whether fans actually want to see Cole Young return.
