A recently revealed PlayStation patent, originally filed in 2023, details a new feature using AI to automatically create highlight reels from your gaming sessions.
According to MP1st, the new system will track your gaming activity, identifying important events like defeating bosses or achieving high scores.
It’ll then use AI to understand your playstyle and learn which feats matter most.
Think about Call of Duty: if someone who rarely gets double kills manages one, it’s a big deal and worth saving as a highlight. But if a skilled player gets double kills all the time, it’s less special and probably wouldn’t be highlighted.
As a PlayStation fan, I’m really excited about this new patent! It looks like Sony is working on making it even easier to capture gameplay footage on future consoles. They’ve always been great at this – remember how awesome the Share button was on the PS4? This seems like they’re just building on that and making the whole process smoother.
Currently, players have to record and then edit their best moments by hand.
This writing proposes that we could automatically create video clips and promotional images by combining videos with screenshots, making them instantly ready to share online.
We want to showcase amazing things players do in the game, focusing on skills and achievements that match how they usually play and how well they perform.
This is similar to Spotify Wrapped, but instead of music, it shows you a personalized summary of your gaming activity and accomplishments.
We believe this is a good approach, and it offers clear benefits for Sony. Any viral content generated would essentially act as free advertising for the PlayStation platform.
While this is an interesting invention, most patents don’t actually become products you can buy. So, don’t anticipate seeing this feature in the PlayStation 6 when it first comes out.
