A new Netflix documentary series is quickly becoming a hit, topping the charts in 21 countries and landing at number one in the U.S. Given its captivating subject matter – especially for fans of true crime – it’s not surprising so many people are watching.
The novel Should I Marry a Murderer? follows Dr. Caroline Muirhead, a Scottish forensic pathologist who has recently escaped an abusive relationship. She quickly becomes engaged to a captivating man named Alexander “Sandy” McKellar, who lives on a secluded estate. However, she soon discovers a dark secret: years earlier, Sandy was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a cyclist. Instead of reporting it, he and his brother secretly buried the victim on their property. The truth eventually surfaces, revealing that the victim, Tony Parsons – a cancer survivor participating in a charity bike ride – was still alive when they moved his body.
It’s a Truly Shocking Crime That Has Viewers Throwing Stones
Much of the focus was on Muirhead and how she dealt with a deeply damaging relationship with McKellar, which followed an abusive situation. She stayed with him even after learning about his actions, and by the time the trial began, she was severely traumatized, struggling with both mental health and addiction, ultimately leading her to miss the court date. Although Muirhead initially reported McKellar to the police, a lack of evidence hindered their progress. Instead, police spent a year gathering evidence against both brothers. Crucially, recordings Muirhead made during her increasingly toxic relationship with McKellar proved vital in securing convictions for both of them.
One person commented that the woman seemed to be intentionally seeking attention, having prepared videos for a self-focused documentary. However, another viewer disagreed, pointing out that she likely wasn’t starting from a place of strength. They felt she was already dealing with significant vulnerabilities, beyond a previous difficult breakup. This person argued that open conversations like this are crucial for improving mental health support, helping people understand the signs of mental illness, trauma, and the impact of past relationships. While acknowledging this situation was extreme, they urged viewers to offer compassion alongside accountability.
