5 Perfect Cartoon Network Shows That Will Never Get Rebooted (But Not for the Reasons You Think)

Animated revivals are incredibly popular right now, and Cartoon Network is seeing success with this trend. This week brings back the beloved characters Mordecai and Rigby in Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, but it’s not a complete reboot – it’s a continuation of their original story. We’ve seen many classic franchises like Thundercats, She-Ra, Batman, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles get remade for new audiences. While some animated series thrive with updates, others will likely remain untouched, and the reasons might surprise you.

5.) Dexter’s Laboratory

Recently, Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Dexter’s Laboratory, discussed the possibility of a reboot. However, he confirmed it’s unlikely to happen due to the passing of Christine Cavanaugh, the voice of Dexter. Tartakovsky explained that Cavanaugh was so integral to the character that he doesn’t feel comfortable recasting the role, especially since he’s already created so much content. While he may not revisit this series, Tartakovsky has been working on other projects like Primal and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.

4.) Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy

Fans hoping for a revival of Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy will likely be disappointed. Creator Danny Antonucci has said he turned down an offer from Adult Swim to create a sequel or remake. He believes revisiting the show, even with a new spin like an adult version, wouldn’t work because it would simply rehash old ideas. Antonucci feels the original series was unique and that trying to recreate it would ultimately fail.

3.) Space Ghost Coast to Coast

Space Ghost started as a traditional, strong superhero created by Hanna-Barbera, but he later became something completely different. Similar to Dexter’s Laboratory, the show Space Ghost Coast to Coast was largely shaped by the voice of George Lowe. Lowe, a gifted voice actor who sadly passed away last year, left behind a remarkable legacy. His unique portrayal of Space Ghost—transformed from hero to late-night host—played a key role in the success of Adult Swim. While Space Ghost might reappear in the future, it’s unlikely anyone could replicate Lowe’s iconic version of the character.

2.) Johnny Bravo

The cartoon Johnny Bravo feels like a product of its time and wouldn’t really work today. Its creator, Van Partible, hasn’t expressed any interest in reviving the show, and Johnny Bravo himself hasn’t appeared in recent Cartoon Network crossovers featuring characters from older shows—like the ‘Jellystone’ event, ‘Crisis on Infinite Mirths.’ While Johnny was a key part of Cartoon Network’s early success, even his own series went through changes, and despite a near-miss with a live-action movie, it’s unlikely we’ll see him return.

1.) Infinity Train

When HBO Max began removing animated shows, the cancellation of Infinity Train upset many fans more than any other series. Creator Owen Dennis has consistently hoped to revive the show, but as a continuation of the existing story, not a complete restart. Infinity Train is well-suited to this approach, as each season typically follows a different character’s journey within the same world. If the show returns, it could feature a new lead character, but it wouldn’t be a reboot – it would simply continue the original storyline.
