Even though critics and audiences didn’t love it, this new disaster movie sequel has quickly become HBO’s most popular show. It jumped to the top of the most-watched list right away, knocking the controversial adaptation of Wuthering Heights out of the number one spot. While it didn’t quite live up to the original, it looks like this film will stay popular for a while.
Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin return in Greenland 2: Migration, picking up after a massive comet strike nearly destroyed Earth. The Garrity family—Butler, Baccarin, and Roman Griffith Davis—venture out of their safe bunker, searching for a new, habitable home. They’re heading to a crater in France that might offer breathable air and a chance to rebuild. Unfortunately, critics say the sequel doesn’t live up to the original, ending on a disappointing note rather than with a powerful climax.
Where Did Greenland 2 Go Wrong?
The first Greenland movie felt genuinely heartfelt and easy to connect with, even though it wasn’t flawless. It fully committed to telling a story about a family struggling to survive against overwhelming challenges. However, the sequel feels like all flash and no substance, despite featuring the same actors. According to critic Grant Watson, the emotional core of the original is missing, and Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin’s fight for survival feels routine and uninspired – even boring. What was once charmingly absurd about the plot now just feels tedious.
While general audiences weren’t overly impressed with Greenland 2, giving it a 66% rating, some found it an improvement over the first film. One viewer commented that while better than the original, the sequel didn’t quite reach its full potential. They felt the movie tried to do too much, which made important scenes feel hurried and lacked impact. The acting was generally good, and the overall concept was entertaining, but it could have been developed further.
