From the start, a key part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man has been his connection with Tony Stark. In Captain America: Civil War, Iron Man took Spider-Man under his wing, creating a fun relationship that continued throughout the later Infinity Saga movies. Because the MCU skipped the classic Uncle Ben origin story, Tony Stark stepped in as a mentor for young Peter. While Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Holland had great chemistry, some Marvel fans didn’t love it. They felt the MCU’s Spider-Man relied too much on Tony Stark’s technology and wasn’t the self-reliant, resourceful hero he’s known as in the comics, leading to the nickname “Iron Man Jr.”
Ten years after Tom Holland first appeared as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, things seem to be shifting. A key feature of the new Spider-Man: Brand New Day storyline is its focus on smaller, more personal stories, offering a break from the large-scale, universe-hopping adventures and alien threats Peter Parker has faced previously. Beyond simply reducing the story’s scope, the series is also developing Peter’s character in a way that finally fulfills the potential of the “Iron Man Jr.” storyline, which should please fans.
The MCU’s Peter Parker Is More Like Tony Stark Than Ever Before

The story of Spider-Man: Brand New Day begins with Peter Parker feeling quite down. He’s still dealing with the consequences of Doctor Strange’s spell from Spider-Man: No Way Home – a spell that made everyone forget he exists. While Peter watches his former friends live their lives on social media, they have no idea who he is, leaving him completely alone for the first time. The beginning of the story highlights just how isolated Peter has become, and director Destin Daniel Cretton notes that Peter has fallen into some unhealthy habits.
I was really excited to read the script details about Spider-Man’s new gear! It’s cool to see director Cretton emphasizing that Peter actually makes all this tech himself. It feels like a return to his roots – remember how he built everything in the early MCU days? After Doctor Strange’s spell, Peter’s cut off from Stark’s resources – Happy doesn’t even recognize him at the end of No Way Home – so he’s basically back to being the resourceful, DIY hero we first met, just like those other Spider-Men we’ve seen. It’s awesome that he’s whipping up gadgets with a homemade fabricator and even building his own AI assistant – it really feels like classic Spider-Man.
Peter’s resourceful approach to surviving in Brand New Day brings to mind the original Iron Man. Like Tony Stark building his first suit in a cave with limited materials, Peter relies on his own ingenuity. This early scene showcased Stark’s brilliance – he didn’t always need vast resources to overcome challenges. His intelligence was his most powerful tool, giving him an advantage in any situation. While his intellect sometimes led to problems, such as the creation of Ultron, it was usually a significant strength.
Looking at it this way, Brand New Day really completes the arc of the relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark. It reminds us of the beginning, like in Captain America: Civil War, when Spider-Man was just starting out as a hero. Stark clearly saw potential in Peter and wanted to help him improve, and Brand New Day confirms that Tony’s belief in Peter was well-placed. It seems Tony saw a lot of himself in Peter, and Peter’s ability to create his own Spider-Man suit and technology shows he doesn’t need vast wealth to protect his city.
Brand New Day Is the Perfect Way to Honor Tony Stark’s Legacy

In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker is dealing with the grief of losing Tony Stark. He has a heartfelt talk with Happy Hogan where it’s suggested that people expect him to fill Tony Stark’s shoes – to become the next Iron Man – which is a lot of pressure. While the movie’s main story focuses on Spider-Man battling Mysterio, it’s also very much about Peter honoring Tony’s memory. A central theme of Peter’s journey is his realization that he doesn’t need to become the next Iron Man. He understands that nobody can replace Tony Stark, but he can still carry on Tony’s values and use the lessons he learned from him, forging his own path as a hero.
“Brand New Day” is a fitting end to the “Iron Man Jr.” storyline. Based on the script, it’s clear Peter is finally embracing the inspiration he got from Tony Stark, using his own resources and ingenuity to succeed. He’s learning from his mentor, applying Tony’s problem-solving skills and creativity to build tools that make him a more effective hero. It’s easy to picture Tony feeling proud of how far Peter has come. While Peter won’t become another wealthy Tony Stark, he’s definitely matched Tony in terms of intelligence, drive, and commitment.
It’s good to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe focusing on Spider-Man as a self-reliant hero, which is more true to the character’s roots. Spider-Man’s enduring popularity comes from how relatable he is – he’s an ordinary person facing everyday struggles. While Tom Holland’s scenes with Robert Downey Jr. were fun, the MCU version of Spider-Man became too reliant on Stark’s technology. Now, he’s being given a chance to rebuild and rely on his own abilities.
In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark takes away Peter Parker’s high-tech suit, telling him he shouldn’t have it if he relies on it too much. The Brand New Day storyline perfectly reflects this idea. Peter loses his advanced technology and support network, but continues to protect people anyway. He proves he doesn’t need Stark’s gadgets to be Spider-Man. This demonstrates the lesson Tony was trying to teach him from the beginning, making Brand New Day a fitting tribute to both Stark’s influence and the core spirit of Spider-Man.
