A subtle reference from one popular show to another is gaining attention, now that more viewers are discovering it in a higher quality format. However, dedicated fans have known about this hidden detail – a little ‘Easter egg’ – for about twenty years, ever since it first appeared.
Sharp-eyed viewers recently spotted something surprising in a 25-year-old episode of the Battlestar Galactica miniseries: a ship from Firefly briefly appearing in the sky. A Reddit user questioned if this was an intentional reference, or an ‘Easter egg,’ while watching on a larger screen. Other fans quickly confirmed that it was, in fact, the Firefly ship they suspected.
The Same Studio Worked on Both Beloved Series

Fans have noticed a cool connection between two popular sci-fi shows thanks to the work of Zoic Studios. The Emperor’s shuttle from Battlestar Galactica actually appeared in the very first episode of Firefly during a takeoff sequence. But that’s not all – eagle-eyed viewers also spotted a Weiland-Yutani turret in Firefly’s opening scene, and recognized armor suggesting soldiers fought on the planet Klendatu. It’s a fun example of how sci-fi shows often reuse elements and include hidden references, creating a shared universe for fans to enjoy.
The Firefly universe is expanding with a new animated series, which is especially exciting for fans of the original show. This revival will take place between the 2002 television series and the 2005 film, Serenity. While some fans are hesitant about an animated format, most are thrilled to see the show return after its premature cancellation. One fan expressed their enthusiasm on X, saying, “If Nathan Fillion and the rest of the crew are involved, I’m on board! Shiny!”
