Guerrilla Games Co-Founder, Former Epic Games Developer is Building a New “European” Game Engine

Recently, many European companies have been seeking technology solutions outside of the US, and it appears game engines could be the next area of focus. Arjan Brussee, a co-founder of Guerrilla Games and long-time industry professional with experience at Epic Games (where he worked in the 1990s), has announced he’s developing a new game engine based in Europe. This news follows eight years Brussee spent at Epic Games leading product management for Unreal Engine.

So, I heard about this new game engine being developed in Europe – it’s called the Immense Engine. The creator, Brussee, wants it to be completely European-made and hosted, meaning it’ll follow all the rules and laws here. Basically, he’s building it as a real alternative to the engines we usually see coming out of the US and China. It’s cool to see someone trying to create something independent and locally focused!

I’ve noticed something cool lately – game engines aren’t just for games anymore! It’s like, being able to build realistic 3D environments is becoming super important for all sorts of things, not just entertainment. It’s neat to see the tech we use for gaming being applied to other projects now.

The Immense Engine will be built with AI tools fully integrated into its core. Unlike engines like Unreal, which were designed for manual, menu-driven workflows, the Immense Engine aims for a more flexible system. Currently, making changes in engines like Unreal often requires adjustments across the entire program, but the Immense Engine will avoid this limitation.

With AI becoming more prevalent, we need a new way of building important software, according to Brussee. He, a veteran in the field, believes there are exciting possibilities ahead.

With the right AI tools and a solid understanding of how to use them, one person can achieve the productivity of ten to fifteen.

Last year, Epic Games significantly upgraded its Unreal Engine. This update included new features designed to keep frame rates at a smooth 60 FPS in large, open-world games without sacrificing visual quality. The upgrade also made MetaHuman Creator a direct part of the engine, eliminating the need for separate plugins or programs.

Epic Games recently released an update focused on helping creators build incredibly detailed and expansive open-world environments that run flawlessly on today’s gaming hardware. They’ve also significantly improved the animation process within the engine, minimizing the need to switch between different software programs. Now, MetaHumans can be created entirely within the engine itself, making the creative process faster and easier.

Unreal Engine and Unity are the two most popular game engines, powering a huge number of games. Recently, other options have emerged, like Godot, an open-source engine particularly well-suited for independent developers. Godot provides tools for both 2D and 3D artists and supports the C# programming language.
