Evacuate the dancefloor—So You Think You Can Dance has come to an end.
Rob Wade, President of Fox, has confirmed that the popular dancing competition show won’t be back on the air in the near future. This news comes almost two years after the show completed its 18th season.
According to Variety, Fox executive Wade told reporters that while the show has been significant for the network, there are currently no plans for a new season. He mentioned they’ve discussed the possibility, but haven’t made any official decisions.
As a longtime fan, I always looked forward to SYTYCD every summer for nearly two decades – it was a real staple of Fox’s programming! I loved seeing judges like Allison Holker, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and the incredibly talented Stephen “tWitch” Boss offer their expertise. And it was fun to see faces from Dance Moms, like JoJo Siwa and Maddie Ziegler, join the judging panel too.
The show also discovered many performers who later became famous, such as Witney Carson from Dancing With the Stars, Ariana DeBose, and Tate McRae. It also featured well-known hosts like Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who hosted the first season in 2005, and Cat Deeley.
Nigel Lythgoe Jr. has confirmed that So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) won’t be back after its eighteenth season, which aired in 2024. The show originally ran continuously from 2005 to 2019, took a break in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and then returned in 2022 with JoJo, tWitch, and Matthew Morrison as judges.
After returning for a season, the former Glee actor suddenly left the show because he didn’t adhere to the rules for how the competition was run.
Morrison announced his departure from the show, explaining that he didn’t adhere to standard production guidelines after helping to choose the finalists. This made it impossible for him to judge the competition fairly, and he expressed his regret about the situation.

Later that year, tWitch tragically took his own life, and as a result, plans for a new season were cancelled.
The show came back in 2024 for what was billed as its 18th and final season—though that might change. This season featured a new format with competitions and took a more documentary-like approach to showcasing the contestants’ stories. Anthony Curley won that year, but fans generally weren’t very impressed with the season as a whole.
One Reddit user expressed disappointment with most of the season, saying the finale was so strong it highlighted how weak the rest of the show had been. They felt the show strayed from what made it good – focusing on the dancers themselves and their partnerships – and instead showed too much behind-the-scenes footage of group choreography, with not enough actual dancing.
Someone else commented on the new format, saying it was quite different from past auditions, but they still had a good experience.
