Sony’s subtle move a few years ago to boost reported PlayStation 2 sales to 160 million now looks like a brilliant decision. It seems the console will likely remain the best-selling video game console ever.
The Nintendo Switch is nearing the PlayStation 2’s all-time sales record of 156 million units. However, Nintendo forecasts sales of only two million Switches in the coming year.
The Nintendo console will likely fall about two million units short of Sony’s sales record, and sales are expected to decrease further next year. It’s going to be a very close competition, but considering Nintendo is concentrating on the Switch 2 and the current economic difficulties, it seems the PlayStation 2 will ultimately win by a narrow margin.
We’re starting to wonder if Sony still has some original PlayStation 2 consoles stored away. They clearly aren’t willing to give up this record easily.
Considering the Switch has been available for nine years, and the PlayStation 2 lasted for thirteen, the Switch is actually selling at a quicker pace than the PS2 did.
Surprisingly, the PlayStation 2 continued to sell very well even after the PlayStation 3 came out in 2006, becoming a popular and affordable choice for many families.
In the past, game console companies could easily modify their systems to lower prices. However, as the parts used in consoles have become more complex, it’s now much harder for them to reduce manufacturing costs.
It’s said that all records are meant to be broken, but if the Nintendo Switch doesn’t surpass the PlayStation 2’s sales, it’s hard to imagine anything ever will.
While anything is possible, consoles aren’t as central to gaming as they used to be. We’re now in a period where new versions offer smaller improvements, making it harder for both existing and future consoles to achieve the same sales figures as previous generations.
