The 10 Most Iconic Heralds of Galactus, Ranked by Importance

Galactus is a cosmic being who consumes planets, but he relies on helpers called heralds to locate suitable worlds. These heralds search for planets brimming with life energy and the nutrients Galactus needs to survive. The Silver Surfer was the first herald introduced in Marvel Comics, appearing in Fantastic Four #48 and kicking off the story arc that introduced Galactus. Jack Kirby created the Silver Surfer without telling writer Stan Lee, believing Galactus needed someone to guide him across the universe. Since then, other characters have served as heralds, though none have become as famous as the Silver Surfer, each playing a unique and important role.

Here is a look at the most important heralds of Galactus in Marvel Comics history.

10) Praeter

I remember when Praeter showed up – he wasn’t as famous as other heralds, but that’s because his story started before he actually became one. He was just a regular guy, a pastor named Mike from Oklahoma, actually. He was helping people rebuild after Asgard was reformed there, trying to get humans and Asgardians to get along. Then, this huge fight broke out between Asgard and Galactus over something called the Seed of Yggdrasil, and Mike really stepped up. The Silver Surfer thought he’d be a good replacement as Galactus’s herald, and he agreed! What was really different about Praeter was that he said he’d use human morals to decide which planets Galactus should even look at. It was a pretty bold idea.

9) Red Shift

Red Shift is an alien whose origins are a mystery. He first appeared in the 1999 comic Galactus: The Devourer, created by Louise Simonson, Jon J. Muth, and John Buscema. He gained the ability to create dimensional rifts and portals thanks to the Power Cosmic, allowing him to send objects across huge distances. He uses two special swords to cut openings in space, which helps him and Galactus travel quickly. Later, he joined the United Front as a herald during the Annihilation Wave. While he played a key role in that battle, he unfortunately died, limiting his long-term impact.

8) The Fallen One

As a longtime comics fan, I’ve always found the backstory of the Fallen One fascinating. He’s a bit of a deep cut – Galactus’s original herald, a role added to the mythos later on. First appearing in 2004’s Thanos #11, he’s different from the other heralds we know. Instead of the Power Cosmic, he drew his abilities from dark energy, giving him powers like matter manipulation, control over the electromagnetic spectrum, super strength, and the ability to project dark matter. But here’s the thing: the Fallen One wasn’t a loyal servant. He actually tried to kill Galactus on multiple occasions, which led to him being cast out. He then fell in with Thanos as his herald, a really interesting turn. Sadly, his story came to an end during the lead-up to Annihilation: Silver Surfer, killed by Galactus’s old foes, Aegis and Tenebrous. It’s a tragic arc for a character who started as Galactus’s first attempt at finding a suitable herald.

7) Morg the Executioner

Morg the Executioner was a fearsome alien chosen by Galactus to replace Frankie Raye (Nova) when Galactus discovered she’d been secretly protecting planets. Unlike most heralds, Morg wasn’t afraid of Galactus, instead showing a bold, almost challenging respect. This attitude caused friction, as Galactus interpreted it as disobedience. Morg wielded a powerful, double-bladed battle axe fueled by the Power Cosmic. He quickly became infamous for killing Frankie and damaging the Air-Walker, another former herald—actions Galactus hadn’t ordered. These events made Morg the most violent herald in Marvel Comics history.

6) Stardust

Stardust was a powerful being made of pure energy, originally from a race known as the Ethereal. When Galactus selected her to be his herald, granting her the Power Cosmic, she gained incredible strength, resilience, and the ability to control energy. What set her apart was her ruthless desire for all life on the planets Galactus devoured to be extinguished – she would even hunt down and kill anyone who managed to escape. However, Stardust later turned heroic, fighting alongside Firebrand and Red Shift against the devastating Annihilation Wave. As a reward, Galactus offered her a unique position: a second herald.

5) Air-Walker (Gabriel Lan)

Gabriel Lan, originally a Nova Centurion from Xandar, became known as Air-Walker. He stepped in as Galactus’s herald after Galactus left the Silver Surfer on Earth following conflicts with the Fantastic Four. Air-Walker was a close friend of Pyreus Kril, who would later become Firelord. During his time serving Galactus, they developed a close relationship. When Air-Walker died while in service, Galactus kept his death a secret for a while. Despite this, Air-Walker remains a significant figure in popular culture and was eventually brought back to life during the herald war against Morg.

4) Firelord (Pyreus Kril)

Firelord was a powerful being, like other heralds of Galactus, and stepped in to replace Air-Walker after Galactus confirmed his death. Galactus was genuinely saddened by the loss, which created a strong bond of loyalty between him and Firelord. Firelord possessed incredible abilities granted by the Power Cosmic, including controlling flames, flying, super strength, and enhanced durability, and he wielded a staff wreathed in fire. Galactus held Firelord in such high regard that he granted his request to be relieved of duty without any conditions. This eventually led to a famous encounter where Spider-Man defeated Firelord on Earth. Later, Firelord rejoined Galactus to fight in the Annihilation event.

3) Terrax the Tamer

Terrax the Tamer first appeared in Fantastic Four #211 in 1979, created by Marv Wolfman and John Byrne. Galactus selected him as his new herald, but Terrax requested the Fantastic Four weaken the violent alien in exchange for their aid against the Sphinx. After the Fantastic Four defeated him and revealed his vulnerabilities, Galactus granted Terrax the Power Cosmic, giving him control over earth, a powerful Cosmic Axe, and the ability to survive in space. However, this defeat actually made Terrax more ruthless, fueled by both ambition and fear. Though his time with Marvel Comics was brief, he located more planets for Galactus than any other herald. Ultimately, when Terrax attempted to overthrow Galactus, he lost all his powers, demonstrating the price of disloyalty.

2) Nova (Frankie Raye)

Frankie Raye, known as Nova, first appeared in Fantastic Four comics as Johnny Storm’s girlfriend. She later gained powers like Johnny’s – the ability to transform into flames – and assisted the Fantastic Four multiple times. When Terrax turned against Galactus, Frankie volunteered to become Galactus’s new herald to save Earth and experience the freedom of exploring the universe. As Galactus’s herald, she led him to the Skrull empire, resulting in its destruction. Eventually, Frankie regretted her role and wanted to be released from her duties. Galactus replaced her with Morg, who later killed Frankie.

1) Silver Surfer

The Silver Surfer is widely considered Galactus’s most significant herald in Marvel Comics. He debuted in Fantastic Four #48 (1966) and was actually introduced before Galactus himself, though Galactus appeared briefly at the end of that same issue. More than just a messenger, the Surfer served as Galactus’s moral compass, influencing which planets were destroyed. However, when the Surfer defied Galactus and helped the Fantastic Four, he was punished with exile and left stranded on Earth. Prior to this, the Surfer had faithfully served Galactus for almost a century, during which Galactus suppressed his memories and feelings to ensure his obedience. The Silver Surfer remains the most well-known and longest-serving herald, starring in his own comic series, major cosmic storylines, and most adaptations involving Galactus.
