The show Invincible plans to further embrace a storyline element that received criticism in season 4 for upcoming seasons.
As a huge fan of Invincible, I have to say episode 4 of season 4, “Hurm,” was a bit of a departure. It told a story completely new to the show – not based on the comics at all – focusing on Mark Grayson’s time with Damien Darkblood in Hell. Sadly, it didn’t really resonate with a lot of us fans. It currently has a 6.5/10 on IMDb, making it the lowest-rated episode so far. But the good news is, creator Robert Kirkman isn’t letting that stop him from introducing original storylines into the series in the future, which I think is a great idea!
Kirkman recently told The Direct that upcoming seasons of Invincible will feature more standalone stories. The writers have a lot of ideas for how to make the show different from the comic books, and these ‘side quests’ will help them do that. Here’s what he had to say:
The show isn’t running out of stories because the writers are full of ideas! We have plenty planned, and you can look forward to more side stories and smaller arcs being woven into the main plot. We just enjoy creating them and think they’ll add to the show.
Simon Racioppa, a co-showrunner on Invincible, explained that any new stories they add to the animated series need to fit naturally into the existing plot. The Invincible team especially wants to ensure every episode feels essential and contributes to the overall story. If a new idea helps move things forward, they consider it worth pursuing, and the Damien storyline did just that.
Damien, a supernatural detective in the comic books, was sent back to Hell by Cecil Stedman, head of the Global Defense Agency, and disappeared from the main story. Robert Kirkman, the creator, initially planned to bring the character back in the comics, but later changed his mind. However, the Invincible animated series allowed him to finally include that storyline, but in animated form.
The possibility of Damien’s return was hinted at after the credits of the Invincible season 3 finale, showing him summoning a demon – later identified as Satan. Satan told Damien that a powerful person on Earth could help him regain his power. Damien planned to use Omni-Man for this, but a mistake during the summoning ritual – specifically, using a sample of Nolan Grayson’s blood – caused him to summon Mark instead, as seen in the ‘Hurm’ episode.
Despite some initial challenges, things ultimately worked out when Mark assisted Damien and Satan in defeating Volcanikka, who had seized control of Hell. Though the episode “Hurm” didn’t receive the same critical acclaim as other episodes of Invincible, it convinced Kirkman and his team to explore completely new story arcs instead of just making small changes to the original comic book.
Kirkman and Racioppa haven’t revealed anything about potential new storylines. However, considering the ending of “Hurm” – with Satan tasking Damien to look into Volcanikka’s plans and even considering a trip to the surface – it’s likely that story could be continued.
Prime Video plans to release season 5 of Invincible in 2027. Voice recording for the new season was completed before the announcement in 2025, and both Lee Pace will return as Thragg and Matthew Rhys as Dinosaurus, along with many other characters fans already know and love.
