eBay Responds to GameStop’s Takeover Bid (And It’s Good News for Collectors)

GameStop recently surprised collectors of Pokémon Trading Card Game and other trading card enthusiasts by making an offer to buy eBay. Because eBay is a major player in the collectibles market, this potential purchase could have significantly changed how trading cards are bought and sold. GameStop’s CEO, Ryan Cohen, added to the buzz by listing his own gaming and GameStop collectibles on eBay, suggesting the proceeds would go towards the acquisition. After considering the offer for a week, eBay’s board of directors has now officially responded.

Okay, so eBay officially responded to GameStop’s offer to buy them out on May 12th, and honestly, they pretty much shut it down. Their board said the offer wasn’t serious or appealing at all, so it looks like GameStop won’t be buying eBay or TCG Player. As someone who collects trading cards and gaming stuff, I think that’s probably a good thing, at least for now. By the way, Ryan Cohen is still auctioning off a bunch of rare gaming items and GameStop memorabilia, and as of right now, there’s still a little over a day left to bid!

eBay Resoundingly Rejects GameStop Buyout Offer

Many people concerned about GameStop increasing its presence in the trading card resale market are breathing a sigh of relief after eBay rejected their offer. It appears eBay isn’t planning to reconsider. Their letter to Ryan Cohen detailed six main reasons for the refusal, including the fact that eBay is currently doing well and concerns about the financial details of the proposal, as well as what a combined eBay and GameStop company would look like.

So far, Cohen hasn’t publicly commented on eBay’s rejection of his offer. However, he’s been actively posting about eBay’s current business performance, likely to support his argument for why GameStop should acquire the company. Even though eBay turned down the offer, both the bid itself and Cohen’s posts about eBay have definitely brought a lot of attention to GameStop in the past week.

Items from his eBay collection are attracting high bids – the GameStop signs are already at almost $15,000, and the large Master Chief statue is over $14,500. If he follows through with the auction despite eBay’s disapproval, he could have a significant amount of money for his next project. The auction ends Wednesday, May 13th at 1 PM Eastern Time, so there’s still time to check out what’s available.

It’s likely a positive development for collectors that GameStop won’t be buying eBay and TCGplayer. While we can’t know for sure, the sale would have given GameStop significant control over the collectible card market, potentially leading to higher prices for buyers. Now that eBay has rejected the offer, there’s less concern about increased fees for buying and selling Pokemon cards and other collectibles.
