Princess Diaries 3 Director Teases Anne Hathaway’s “Wish Fulfillment”

A Princess Diaries 3 update? Shut up!

Director Adele Lim recently gave fans a sneak peek at the upcoming third movie in the Anne Hathaway series, which continues the story of Mia Thermopolis over twenty years after she became princess of Genovia.

Adele recently shared with TopMob News that a unique aspect of this project is how it resonates with fans of the original film, many of whom are now mothers themselves. She explained that while discussing the series with Anne, they realized there’s a strong theme of wish fulfillment, particularly for those who grew up loving princess stories.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed something missing in movies: strong female leads who are also allowed to be powerful and successful without apologizing for it. We’ve all been raised on princess stories, and now we crave something more. We want to see women in positions of power – queens, if you will – who are thriving, making things happen, and lifting up the next generation of women. It’s about showing us that we can be fabulous, capable leaders and still make a difference in the lives of others.

In The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Queen Amelia demonstrated her willingness to challenge tradition by canceling her wedding to Andrew Jacoby (Callum Blue) and changing the law so women could inherit the throne without being married.

Adele believes a third Princess Diaries movie is exactly what people need right now, explaining, “For those reasons, I really think it’s a movie we all need in our lives.”

Don’t worry, the story of Genovia’s royal family will be told on film eventually. A queen always arrives on her own time – everyone else is just anticipating it!

We don’t have a firm release date yet,” the co-writer of Crazy Rich Asians explained, “but the script is currently our top priority and we’re making good progress.

In October 2024, a third Princess Diaries movie was announced by Adele, who directed Joy Ride in 2023 as her first film.

She expressed her excitement about working on the new Princess Diaries movie, saying, ‘As a longtime fan of the first film, I’m thrilled to help bring this story to a new generation.’ She also shared that the team hopes to continue the themes of female empowerment, happiness, and positive role models that made the original so special, and share it with audiences around the world.

With everyone eager to see Anne return to Genovia, let’s find out what the cast of The Princess Diaries is up to these days.

Anne Hathaway, who played the Princess of Genovia in the 2001 Disney movie, has become a highly acclaimed actress. She’s received critical praise – and even an Oscar – for her work in films like Les Misérables, The Devil Wears Prada, The Dark Knight Rises, and Ocean’s Eight. She still loves talking about her most well-known roles! She’s currently working on a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada and has suggested she might return for a third Princess Diaries movie.

She announced exciting news in an October 2024 post, writing, “Miracles happen!” and sharing that she was returning to Genovia with @adeleblim, @disney, and @somewherepictures, hinting that the story isn’t over yet.

After marrying jewelry designer Adam Shulman in 2012, they had two sons: Jonathan, born in 2016, and Jack, born in 2019.

Even though Mandy Moore played the disliked character Lana Thomas in The Princess Diaries, she’s remained popular thanks to her successful music career and critically acclaimed role as Rebecca Pearson on the NBC show This Is Us, for which she received an Emmy nomination.

She’s also known for voicing Disney’s Rapunzel in the 2010 film Tangled, starring in the Peacock series Dr. Death, and will soon appear in the comedy film The Breadwinner.

She married musician Ryan Adams in 2008, but they divorced in 2016. She then married musician Taylor Goldsmith in 2018, and they have three children together: sons August “Gus” Harrison (born 2021) and Oscar “Ozzie” Bennett (born 2022), and daughter Louise “Lou” Everett (born 2024).

Julie Andrews is a beloved star, known for her iconic role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi and her many appearances in popular family films. She’s starred in movies like Tooth Fairy, Ella Enchanted, Despicable Me, and the Shrek series.

The Academy Award-winning actress, famous for her leading roles in films like The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins, is also a popular author. She’s written a successful series of children’s books called The Very Fairy Princess.

You probably recognize her voice – she’s the one who narrates Bridgerton as Lady Whistledown!

She married set designer Tony Walton in 1959, with Maggie Smith attending the wedding. They had a daughter, Emma, in 1962, but divorced in 1968. In 1969, she married director Blake Edwards and became stepmother to his children, Jennifer and Geoffrey. They went on to have two daughters, Amelia and Joanna, and enjoyed a 41-year marriage until Blake Edwards passed away in 2010. She is now a grandmother of nine and a great-grandmother of three.

Fans also remember Mia’s friend Lilly, who hosted her own public access TV show called Shut Up and Listen and always defended Mia from criticism. Actress Heather Matarazzo continues to work in television, with appearances on shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Exes & Ohs, and in films such as Hostel: Part II. Recently, she moved from Hollywood to her wife Heather Turman’s home state.

The actor, who will be in the next season of Wednesday, revealed in a TikTok video from August 2024 that his wife grew up in Michigan. They met in Los Angeles around eight years ago, and about a year and a half ago, they started wondering if they wanted to continue living there.

After hearing a firm rejection, the actress enthusiastically shared how much she enjoyed being there, praising the beautiful natural surroundings and the kindness of everyone she met.

Okay, let’s talk pop culture! Remember that hilarious cameo Sandra Oh did? Even though it was a short scene, those lines were gold and everyone’s still quoting them! Of course, she’s a total star – we all adore her from shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve. Seriously, she’s a talent you can’t ignore!

In 2003, the Emmy-winning star married filmmaker Alexander Payne, but the two divorced in late 2006.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I always enjoy seeing how actors evolve after their big roles! Many of you probably recognize Robert Schwartzman as Michael Moscovitz, Mia’s incredibly supportive friend in The Princess Diaries. But did you know he’s a multi-talented artist? After that iconic film, Robert really blossomed – he became the frontman for the rock/pop band Rooney, and has also directed some fantastic films, including Dreamland (2016), The Unicorn (2018), and most recently, The Good Half (2023). He’s actually Jason Schwartzman’s younger brother, too – talent clearly runs in the family!

He’s also worked as a producer on films including The Last Showgirl, Takin’ Care of Business, and I Live Here Now. He married photographer Zoey Grossman in 2017. Sharing a sweet story on Instagram in 2021 for their anniversary, he explained they first met in first grade. He proposed to her at the elementary school where they took their yearbook photos, saying he’d married his best friend and couldn’t be happier – and that things just keep getting better.

Oh my gosh, Erik Von Detten! I still remember him as Mia’s super cute crush, Josh Bryant, on Days of Our Lives! It’s amazing to me that after that, he was in Complete Savages – though it didn’t last long. And can we talk about how he kept voicing Sid from Toy Story in all the sequels, right up to Toy Story 3?! He did so much voice work and TV stuff after that, but I hadn’t seen him on screen since an episode of Bones back in 2008… until now! He was in the new TV movie My Acting Coach Nightmare!

And it gets even better – he’s married to Angela Von Detten, and they have the cutest family! They have a daughter, Claire, who was born in May 2019, and two sons, Thomas (March 2021) and Nicholas (December 2022). Seriously, he’s totally adorable and I’m so happy to see him doing well!

He told TopMob News in 2021 that he’d always dreamed of having a big family, which led him to step away from the unpredictable world of acting. Fortunately, as acting work began to dwindle in his early twenties, he found a stable job at a finance company when he was 25. He’s been there ever since, working his way up to a management role, and he says it’s been a great fit.
