The Odyssey isn’t Travis Scott’s first verse.
This role represents a major step forward in his acting career. Director Christopher Nolan cast the rapper, known for his song “Sicko Mode,” specifically because of his musical experience – he’ll be playing a bard in the new film.
As a storyteller, I’m always thinking about how stories have been passed down through generations. When I cast a particular actor, I wanted to subtly acknowledge that this film feels like a modern retelling of an ancient tradition – something akin to the way rap music carries on the legacy of oral poetry. It’s about honoring that lineage and the power of spoken word.
Travis Scott, who shares eight-year-old Stormi and four-year-old Aire with Kylie Jenner, recently appeared in a trailer for the film The Odyssey. Though he hasn’t spoken much about his role, he made a strong impression in the trailer, momentarily quieting a noisy hall to share a story with Tom Holland’s character, Telemachus, about his father, Odysseus, played by Matt Damon.
He speaks with a powerful voice, describing the Trojan War: a conflict, a hero, and a clever deception—the Trojan Horse—used to conquer the city. He paints a vivid picture of Troy falling, consumed by flames and filled with cries of destruction.
Scott has appeared in a few projects before, including the TV special Trolls: Holiday in Harmony and the film Aggro Dr1ft. While this movie is his first time acting in a Christopher Nolan film, he previously contributed a song to Nolan’s 2020 movie, Tenet.
Nolan explained to GQ that casting the actor felt like completing a year-long challenge. He said the actor quickly offered incredibly helpful and deep understanding of the music and story that composer Ludwig Göransson and he were creating.
His ability to tell a story will be valuable as he and the impressive cast of The Odyssey—including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and others—bring this classic tale to life.

Okay, so Nolan knows everyone loves the original Greek, and he totally gets that some scholars might not be thrilled with what he’s done with it. But honestly, he’s just asking them to please give his movie a chance! I mean, it’s Nolan, right? It’s going to be amazing, and I’m sure he’s put so much thought into everything. Just trust him, classicists! Please!
“Hopefully they’ll enjoy the film,” he told Time, “even if they don’t agree with everything.”
While you’re anticipating the release of The Odyssey in theaters on July 17th, here’s a look at some other movies coming out this year…
