It seems Gerard Butler‘s action movie sequels arrive in bunches – you wait a long time for one, and then suddenly two are popular at the same time, like with his recent releases on HBO Max. Since his breakout role in Zack Snyder’s 300 – surprisingly, that was 20 years ago! – the Scottish actor has become a dependable action star, known for franchises like Has Fallen and standalone films such as Geostorm and Plane.
He’s currently a major draw on streaming platforms, particularly on HBO Max, where he has three films currently trending, according to FlixPatrol. Globally, his 2025 sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is the third most popular movie. In the United States, he’s doing even better: his 2020 disaster film, Greenland, is second, and the recently added sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, has quickly risen to the top spot.
Why Gerard Butler’s Movies Are Popular On HBO Max (& Are They Worth Watching)

It’s common for new movies to quickly become popular on streaming services, particularly soon after they’ve been in cinemas. Den of Thieves 2 came out last year, but didn’t attract a large audience initially, earning $58 million with a $40 million production budget. Although critics gave it mixed reviews (62% on Rotten Tomatoes), viewers seem to enjoy it more, giving it a 79% audience score on the site. The film isn’t particularly innovative, but it’s an enjoyable watch thanks to Gerard Butler’s charm, good action sequences, and a bit of wit.
This is especially true with Greenland 2. Released in theaters just last January, its availability on streaming so soon is a major draw for viewers. While the film wasn’t a box office success – earning almost $45 million with a much larger budget – and received mixed reviews (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), it still provides enough entertainment and a strong performance by Gerard Butler for a good night in.
Given the success of the new film, HBO Max is also promoting the original Greenland movie. Many viewers are revisiting it or discovering it for the first time, as it was released during the pandemic. Greenland received good reviews (78% on Rotten Tomatoes) and delivers the enjoyable experience you expect from a disaster movie. Of the three Gerard Butler films currently popular on streaming, it’s definitely the strongest, but all three are worth watching.
