RT interviewed actors Aidan Turner and Victoria Smurfit about the recent events in Rutshire.

Were you happy to grow the ‘tache again?
I really like the mustache. It’s comfortable to wear and fits the character well. Mustaches are popular right now, so it doesn’t feel strange to have one.
Do you feel nostalgic on set?
I really enjoy spotting vintage food packaging. Recently, Declan went to buy fireworks and the store was full of snacks from the 80s, which was a wonderful sight.
What were you like in the 80s?
Growing up, I was one of the first kids on my street to own a Nintendo, and I was quite popular – until someone got a Sega Mega Drive! Recently, my son turned four and asked for a Spider-Man-themed party, which reminded me of my own fifth birthday when I dressed up as Spider-Man. I asked my mum about it, and she sent me some old photos.
How do you feel about all the sex scenes?
Victoria and I are good pals, and this is not our first rodeo. We know how to support each other.
Did you do anything to get in shape before filming?
We rarely see Declan practicing his craft outside of work – his job is truly his passion. With other pursuits, you often have to put in a lot of extra effort to succeed, but that wasn’t necessary here, and it was a welcome relief.

What were you like in the 80s?
I idolized Madonna growing up, but I didn’t exactly fit the pop star image – I had red hair, bad acne, and my mom favored a very frilly, country-style look for me.
Did you read the Jilly Cooper books?
When I was fourteen, my family moved to Surrey. Being an Irish family suddenly thrust into a wealthier world felt a lot like the O’Haras’ experience. I was about Taggie’s age then, and my mum and I both adored Maud, even joking about marrying Declan. She’s passed away now, but I want her to know – Mum, I finally did it! I married Declan!
Your first day on set was a sex scene. What was that like?
There’s nothing more fitting for a competitive situation than someone looking completely out of their element – like being in the shower with a bandage on! I have complete faith in Aidan; it’s just two Irish men playfully arguing.
Do you worry about being naked or getting into shape?
I get anxious about it, but I always put off actually dealing with it. It’s a classic case of procrastination – I know it needs to be done, like painting the laundry room, but I just don’t get around to it. Right before filming a nude scene, I feel incredibly nervous, like I’m facing something overwhelming. But as soon as I take off my robe, I’m okay. The crew is professional and unfazed; they’ve seen it all before. It’s a casual acknowledgement – something like, “Alright everyone, it’s a little lower this year!” – and then we just get on with it.
