Anime shows often continue beyond their original storylines. Thanks to fan demand or the creators wanting to expand the universe, sequels have become increasingly common. At egmr.ru, we’ve picked seven of the best anime sequels ever made and ranked them based on how good they are. You’ll probably agree with some of our choices, but others might be unexpected.
7.) Yashashime: Princess Half-Demon

Many anime fans were thrilled when Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon arrived as a sequel to the beloved Inuyasha. Though it didn’t quite reach the heights of the original, Yashahime was a great addition to the Inuyasha world, showing what happened to familiar characters and introducing a new generation. The series ran for forty-eight episodes between 2020 and 2022, and while it’s unlikely to return, it was a satisfying continuation for fans of the original.
6.) Dragon Ball Super

While not without its faults, Dragon Ball Super has significantly expanded the Dragon Ball universe with new characters, exciting fights, and impressive transformations that fans love. Originally intended to revitalize the franchise, it continues to be the main story for Goku and his friends. Though some storylines didn’t quite reach the heights of Dragon Ball Z or the original Dragon Ball, many viewers found the series enjoyable overall. A new installment, Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol, is planned, though the manga adaptation is currently on hold. Despite its flaws, Dragon Ball Super has proven its value as a key part of the Dragon Ball legacy.
5.) Digimon Adventure 02

Digimon Adventure is a major part of the popular Digimon anime series, but many fans actually prefer the next installment, Digimon Adventure 02. The second series introduced a new group of Digi-Destined and further developed the digital world. While the franchise continued with many sequels and spin-offs building on the original story, Digimon Adventure 02 stood out. Its new characters were particularly engaging, and the challenges they faced felt even more significant than those in the first series.
4.) Naruto: Shippuden

While perhaps not surpassing the original Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden successfully increased the tension and told a significantly different story. Now teenagers, Naruto and Team 7 face a new challenge as Naruto clashes with Sasuke Uchiha, who is consumed by revenge for the loss of his clan. Despite being a fantastic addition to the series, Shippuden‘s somewhat unsatisfying ending and the abrupt introduction of its final villain prevent it from ranking higher, though it remains a memorable part of the franchise.
3.) Boruto: Two Blue Vortex

Ranking Boruto: Two Blue Vortex this high, especially above Naruto: Shippuden, is sure to spark debate, but let us explain. Two Blue Vortex takes the strengths of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and makes them even better. Instead of constantly being compared to his father, Boruto finds himself in a completely new and dangerous world, now pursued by his own village. Whether Two Blue Vortex will have a stronger ending than Shippuden remains to be seen, but it’s currently on its way to becoming one of the best series in the shonen genre.
2.) Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War

While you could see Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War as simply continuing the original Bleach anime, the new series has significantly improved upon many aspects of the first season that launched Ichigo Kurosaki’s story. The fight against Yhwach and the Sternritter has been consistently engaging, unlike the original Bleach which often got bogged down in filler episodes. The animation quality in Blood War is also a huge step up, making the story much more visually appealing. With one final season on the way, it looks like Studio Pierrot is determined to make this the best Bleach adaptation yet, staying true to Tite Kubo’s vision.
1.) Dragon Ball Z

Dragon Ball Z remains incredibly popular and is often considered one of the best anime series ever made. It wasn’t just a hit with fans; it also played a huge role in introducing many North American viewers to both the Z-Fighters and the world of anime. Building on the success of the original Dragon Ball, DBZ took everything fans loved and made it even better. To this day, it sets the standard for many other action-packed anime, and is widely recognized as one of the greatest anime sequels of all time.
