You know what? Legend, this so-called “DeFi superapp,” just announced it’s going offline in July. Two years of operation? What a joke. They raised $15 million from investors who probably thought this was a sure thing. Yeah, sure.
- Legend will shut down on July 12 because “sustainable scale” is apparently a myth. Good for them!
- Former Compound execs built this app to combine trading, borrowing, and yield services. Like, why not? It’s not like users want simplicity or anything.
- Step Finance, Parsec, Balancer Labs, and ZeroLend are also folding. Congrats, crypto winter is here, and it’s wearing a trench coat.
Jayson Hobby, Legend’s CEO, said they decided to quit because the product “didn’t reach a scale” that could support the business. Wow, revolutionary. Maybe next time they’ll realize that spending $15 million on an app that no one uses isn’t a business-it’s a hobby. Oh wait, they had that covered too.
Hobby claims the app “attracted users,” but sustaining a company? That’s harder than convincing people Bitcoin is still a good investment in 2025. Built by ex-Compound folks, Legend tried to be the one-stop shop for DeFi. Because nothing says “simplicity” like forcing users to juggle Aave, Compound, and Uniswap in one app. Classic move.
Hobby also said people don’t care if something’s on-chain-they just want better yields and faster payments. Oh, okay, so why build a DeFi app then? Maybe next time they’ll just open a bank and call it a day.
In February 2025, they raised $15 million from Andreessen Horowitz and Coinbase Ventures. And yet, somehow, long-term sustainability remained “out of reach.” Maybe the investors should’ve asked for receipts before sending the money.
This year has been a buffet of DeFi closures. Step Finance shut down after a hack that drained $40 million. Parsec closed after five years, blaming FTX’s collapse. Balancer Labs folded after a $116 million hack. And ZeroLend? Three years in, and they couldn’t even make ends meet. It’s like crypto’s version of a bad dating app-everyone ends up ghosting each other.
Legend users have 60 days before the app dies on July 12. Too bad they’re not giving out user numbers or TVL stats. Maybe they’ll just say, “We had 0 people using it, but hey, at least we tried!”
