Katherine Parkinson discusses what’s coming up for Lizzie in the new season of ‘As Rivals’ on Disney+, and hints at the possibility of her starring in her own TV documentary in the future.
What do you enjoy about playing Lizzie?
She’s flawed – unfaithful and a bit stuck-up – so she’s not exactly a role model. However, Freddie’s admiration means a lot to her, as she’s felt overlooked for a long time. It’s frustrating to see her have to put her husband’s career first when she’s such a gifted writer.
Lizzie’s sex scene with Freddie in series one went viral. How did you feel about that?
I was really happy with how concisely the story was told, especially considering how many characters are in ‘Rivals.’ It felt almost operatic – these quick, intense moments with everyone. Honestly, I was just glad people connected with it, this little, gentle story about some rather melancholy folks in the middle of their lives!
How do you feel about the sex scenes?
Danny is a seasoned actor who isn’t easily embarrassed. He views all acting as somewhat absurd, and portraying intimacy is no different. He doesn’t feel self-conscious about it, even approaching 50, and certainly doesn’t feel taken advantage of.
Regarding the intimate scenes involving Chris Oliver, who portrays Lizzie’s husband James, some viewers found a specific scene in the second season particularly awkward.
The scene is both funny and disturbing. It depicts a situation that’s technically consensual sex, but Lizzie clearly isn’t enthusiastic or willing. I find the theme of forced intimacy within marriage to be a compelling one to explore.
Are you pleased to be working with intimacy co-ordinators?
I remember times when it would have been really helpful to have someone to talk to privately, instead of feeling too ashamed to bring it up in front of everyone.
I recently came across this great point in a series – it questioned why celebrities are often chosen to lead documentaries, asking, “What’s next, Joanna Lumley explaining how to fix a leaky faucet?” It really made me think – would I ever agree to host a documentary if I wasn’t actually an expert on the subject? It’s a funny thought, but also raises a good point about authenticity.
I’m becoming more interested in history as I age. I enjoy learning about places like Pompeii and the practice of mudlarking, though I prefer watching experts like Mary Beard explore those topics. Still, I’m open to trying things myself – you never know!

You can watch Rivals on Disney+. The second season starts streaming on Friday, May 15, 2026. A Disney+ subscription costs from £5.99 per month.
Okay, so I just discovered this app, TopMob: What to Watch, and it’s become my go-to for finding something new to stream. They’re really pushing ‘Add Rivals’ right now, and honestly, it looks good! If you’re tired of endlessly scrolling, download TopMob – they give you daily recommendations and cool features. I’m officially adding ‘Add Rivals’ to my watchlist thanks to them.
