Jon Bernthal Reveals Why The Punisher’s Darkest MCU Moment Had To Be Shown

Be warned: this article reveals major plot details from The Punisher: One Last Kill. Throughout the series, Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) has endured immense suffering after the loss of his family, but The Punisher: One Last Kill shows him at his absolute breaking point within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

After appearing in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again last year, Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher, returned in a standalone special presentation on Disney+. The episode showed him struggling deeply with grief and trauma, experiencing hallucinations of loved ones he’d lost, and even contemplating suicide at his family’s gravesite.

In a conversation with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant, Jon Bernthal shared that a key theme of The Punisher: One Last Kill was Frank Castle’s struggle to connect with others. He felt it was important to show Frank’s difficulty expressing himself and reaching out to those he cared about. This was particularly evident in how he remembered his deceased daughter, Lisa, and the tragic loss of his entire family – Lisa, his son Frank Jr., and his wife Maria – who were all victims of gang violence.

The actor, known for his roles in Marvel films, then discussed a psychological state called anomie. He explained that it can lead to suicidal thoughts, a feeling of complete despair, and the severing of important connections – things like family, faith, or even institutions like the Marine Corps.

We really wanted to focus on showing Frank’s journey back to fighting for justice and taking down bad guys – something fans have been wanting to see. It was crucial that we didn’t skip over any important events or ask the audience to simply trust us about what happened. Instead, we decided to start from the very beginning, showing Frank at his lowest point and then illustrating how he rebuilds his life. The entire show takes place over a single day, and we hope that concentrated timeframe will make a powerful impact.

The show’s depiction of Frank struggling with suicidal thoughts was also inspired by Jon Bernthal’s friendship with Nick Koumalatsos, a Marine Raider, writer, and producer on The Punisher: One Last Kill. Bernthal shared with ScreenRant that Koumalatsos once contemplated suicide, going to the beach with the intention of ending his life. However, a powerful connection with one of his children stopped him.

In The Punisher: One Last Kill, Frank Castle faced new challenges after wiping out most of the Gnucci Family, a criminal group connected to the murder of his wife and children. At his family’s gravesite, he had a vision of his wife, Lisa, which prevented him from ending his own life. He also experienced hallucinations of Curtis Hoyle and Karen Page, characters who previously appeared in the Netflix series The Punisher.

Honestly, seeing Ma Gnucci try to have Frank taken out just made him even more determined. It really hit me when he went back to the graves – he left a paper rose there, one a little kid had given him after he helped save everyone when those criminals attacked his building and the whole neighborhood. It was such a powerful moment, showing how much that experience meant to him and fueled his drive.

I was really glad to see that even though The Punisher: One Last Kill didn’t end with Frank taking out Ma Gnucci, he did go back to being The Punisher. What I loved even more is that he’s now fighting crime to actually protect people, not just to get revenge. It feels like a much more meaningful motivation for him.

This sets the stage for Jon Bernthal to reprise his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which premieres on July 31st and reunites him with his The Odyssey co-stars Tom Holland and Zendaya. While it’s currently unknown what’s next for The Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this development gives the character a fresh start.
