Capcom is planning to revisit some of its beloved older franchises. While they’ve already announced new projects for series like Okami and Onimusha, they haven’t forgotten about others like Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney. According to a recent financial report, Capcom intends to develop these classic IPs further – including Mega Man, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, Okami, and Ace Attorney – through sequels, remakes, and re-releases.
Capcom plans to expand its popular game franchises beyond just games. This includes things like animated series, such as the Devil May Cry adaptation, new arcade machines, and other entertainment options. The company is also focusing on smart pricing and selling older games to keep interest high and pave the way for new releases.
The presentation highlighted franchises like Dead Rising and Dragon’s Dogma, but it appears older, beloved titles such as the Breath of Fire RPG series, the Darkstalkers fighting games, and the Dino Crisis survival horror series aren’t currently part of their plans.
As a long-time Capcom fan, I was really excited to hear Haruhiro Tsujimoto, their COO, talk about reviving some of their older, beloved franchises. It’s great that they’re thinking about the past, but they’re also smart to keep their main focus on the games they’re known for – Street Fighter, Resident Evil, and Monster Hunter. It feels like a good balance between nostalgia and building for the future!
In a recent statement, Tsujimoto explained that the company is tackling challenges step-by-step to increase its chances of success. They’re concentrating on key franchises like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter, planning new installments, sequels, remakes, original games, and versions for current gaming systems. While they currently release two or three major games annually, they understand the need to expand their development pipeline for the future.
Capcom has many well-known and loved game series, including Mega Man, Devil May Cry, and Ace Attorney. We plan to reach more players and boost our success by releasing new games, updated versions, and ports of these titles on modern platforms. We’re focused on strengthening these brands and building strong communities around them, turning them into long-term, essential parts of our business.
The most recent installment in the Devil May Cry series is Devil May Cry 5, released in 2019. This game marked a return for the franchise after an eleven-year gap (excluding the 2013 reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry), following the events of 2008’s Devil May Cry 4. Devil May Cry 5 continued Nero’s story alongside Dante and introduced a new character, V, who is central to the plot. A Special Edition of the game was later released, adding Vergil as a playable character with his own unique moves and music.
A new Okami game is in development, but Clover’s CEO, Kento Koyama, says it’s still some time away from release.
In a New Year’s message, the team shared their excitement about releasing the game, even though it’s still some time away. They promised to work hard throughout the year to create an experience that players worldwide will love.
