New Netflix Movie Has Defeated KPop Demon Hunters

The animated film KPop Demon Hunters was a huge success, becoming the most-watched movie on Netflix. Although a sequel is still a ways off, the story of Mira, Zoey, and Rumi continues to grab attention. Recently, another animated movie arrived on the streaming service and has unexpectedly challenged KPop Demon Hunters’ dominance. While it hasn’t yet become Netflix’s biggest animated hit, it’s quickly gaining popularity and could soon take the top spot.

Netflix’s new animated film, Swapped, starring Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, has become a massive hit. Between May 4th and 10th, it racked up 38.7 million views – the most any Netflix film has ever received in a single week. Surprisingly, Swapped even surpassed KPop Demon Hunters, which previously held the record for total views on the platform, though it never had a week this strong. KPop Demon Hunters peaked at just over 30 million views in a week, meaning Swapped has the potential to become Netflix’s most-watched movie overall.

The Demon Hunters Will Return

Although there’s no official word yet on a sequel to Swapped, KPop Demon Hunters is planned to return with a second installment. Netflix is also hoping to build a larger franchise around the animated film, viewing it as their potential Frozen. Sources within Netflix say they’re considering a live-action remake, a TV series, and even a global concert tour. While the sequel isn’t expected until 2029, fans of Huntrix can look forward to more developments, as the filmmakers have hinted at their plans for the future.

Although details about the next installment are still unknown, producer Michelle Wong recently shared some ideas for what she’d like to see. She’s interested in delving into the backgrounds of Mira and Zoey, and exploring the story of Derpy further, including his relationship with Sussie. The first film ended with the trio successfully defeating the Soja Boys and completing the Golden Honmoon to save the world. Focusing on characters who didn’t get as much screen time in the original movie – like Zoey and Mira, whose pasts were only briefly touched upon – feels like a natural next step.
