Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from episode 7 of The Boys season 5, titled “The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother’s Milk.” If you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to do so before reading further.
As The Boys heads toward the end of its fifth season, it seemed like there wasn’t much space for surprise celebrity appearances. The show is known for featuring famous faces, both for quick jokes and longer roles, but Samuel L. Jackson’s appearance in the latest episode still came as a huge surprise to viewers.
With so many guest stars and celebrity mentions in season 5’s ‘One-Shots’, it felt like The Boys had used up all its surprise cameos. Luckily, the show still managed to include Jackson, who was a perfect fit for its wild and funny world.
Several well-known actors, including Will Ferrell, Charlize Theron, and Seth Rogen, have made appearances as themselves on the show. Additionally, The Boys has featured cast members from Supernatural, with Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan all playing notable roles in Eric Kripke’s series.
Samuel L. Jackson’s cameo in season 5, episode 7 is particularly memorable. He voiced the character of Xander the shark, who first appeared earlier in the season. The surprise of learning Jackson was behind the character made the reveal even funnier, as Xander hadn’t spoken before.
After Black Noir damaged The Deep’s underwater pipeline, all the sea creatures became hostile towards him. Although The Deep got his revenge by killing Black Noir in episode 6, things quickly fell apart when Homelander broke up the Seven. This left The Deep feeling sorry for himself by the ocean, where he was eventually approached by Xander.
Xander tried to coax the superhero into the water with a friendly tone, but when he refused, the shark reacted violently, threatening to kill his old friend if he came near. It was a brilliant moment for actor Karl Urban, whose powerful voice perfectly suited the scene, and he delivered it flawlessly.
The Boys Continues The Tradition Of Major Actors Voicing The Deep’s Fish Friends
In the world of The Boys, animals can’t speak, but The Deep—a character who can communicate with sea creatures—allows us to hear from them sometimes. Season 4 highlighted this with Ambrosius, an octopus who became The Deep’s romantic partner, and was voiced by the acclaimed actress Tilda Swinton.
The role was incredibly unexpected for Tilda Swinton, but she embraced it and delivered a truly memorable performance. The scene where The Deep killed Ambrosius was a powerful mix of tragedy, comedy, and heartbreak, proving how talented Swinton and Chace Crawford both are.
I’ve really noticed how The Boys loves to feature big-name actors playing the aquatic creatures alongside The Deep, and it’s become a fun little tradition! Samuel L. Jackson totally carried on that trend – even with a quick cameo, you knew it was him, and he didn’t disappoint, delivering that signature, wonderfully blunt dialogue he’s so famous for. It was a perfect fit for the show’s style, and I loved it!
I totally forgot about Patton Oswalt voicing The Deep’s gills way back in season 2! It’s always been a funny little detail, considering how insecure The Deep is – and believe me, he has a LOT of them! It was cool seeing another well-known actor get to play a part in a scene with Chace Crawford’s character, though.
As the season nears its end, it seems The Deep won’t be able to turn things around in The Boys, possibly leading to a darkly humorous outcome. This could mean Jackson might reprise his role as Xander, fulfilling a previous commitment and continuing a beloved running gag – a satisfying payoff for fans.
Is Samuel L. Jackson The Boys’ Best-Ever Guest Star?
Landing Samuel L. Jackson for The Boys is a huge win for the show, but with so many fantastic guest stars already, he’ll face tough competition to be remembered as the best. While it’s been entertaining to see actors portray themselves, it also makes it difficult for any one performance to really shine.
Look, we’ve seen a lot of celebrity cameos in ‘The Boys’ – Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, Misha Collins, all that crew. They’re all…fine. But honestly, Karl Urban as Billy Butcher still blows them all away. Jimmy Fallon popped up in Season 1 doing his talk show bit with Translucent, which was clever, but it’s hard to really count when an actor is just playing themselves, you know? It’s a fun moment, but doesn’t have the same impact.
Even with so many actors to choose from, Jackson’s brief but funny role really stood out and surprised viewers. No one anticipated such a legendary actor voicing a random shark, which is why many consider him the best guest star on The Boys.
It’s funny that Tilda Swinton’s character might actually be his strongest competition, because she embodies the show’s unique and strange spirit – the same spirit that allows for scenes like this. But since The Boys is still successfully using satire in its fifth season, seeing an actor like Jackson embrace this challenging role and deliver a great performance, despite the controversy surrounding it, makes this cameo particularly impactful.
Tilda Swinton’s willingness to take on unusual roles helped open the door for actors like Samuel L. Jackson to play characters like Xander. Whether you prefer Swinton or Jackson’s appearance, it’s clear that Samuel L. Jackson is one of the most memorable guest stars in The Boys.
