Taylor Swift, Emily Ratajkowski & More Attend Lena Dunham’s Birthday

It feels like a perfect night for Taylor Swift to celebrate Lena Dunham

Taylor Swift recently joined her close friend Ashley Avignone in New York City on May 12th to celebrate the 40th birthday of Lena Dunham, the creator of the show Girls. The dinner was held at Via Carota in the West Village.

Of course, Lena’s party was full of her closest friends! It was so lovely to see Andrew Rannells, her co-star from Girls, there celebrating with her. And Emily Ratajkowski was there too – they worked together on Lena’s upcoming Netflix series, Too Much, which I’m already counting down the days for!

Lena was joined by her husband, Luis Felber, whom she married in 2021, and film director Romain Gavras at the small gathering.

Everyone at the event was spotted coming and going, and Lena shared a photo showing one guest brought her a pink lava lamp. Andrew also gave fans a glimpse inside, posting a selfie of himself, Lena, Taylor, and Romain relaxing at the Italian restaurant.

You know, as someone who’s always thinking about how we present ourselves, I totally get Andrew’s Instagram post! He shared this amazing photo with a bunch of cool people, and his caption was so relatable – he thanked Lena for taking the picture so he could look cool for a younger audience. It’s a funny little reminder that even celebrities want to connect with the next generation, and sometimes a great photo op is all it takes!

It’s not surprising to see Taylor supporting Lena’s recent achievement, even with her own busy life. She was recently in Greece with Travis Kelce for a wedding, but still made time to show her support. Taylor actually highlighted their friendship in the acknowledgements section of her recent memoir, Famesick.

In her new memoir, Lena wrote to Taylor Swift, acknowledging the profound impact of her music. She explained that Taylor’s songs inspired the book, unlocked her own stories, and connect with people worldwide. Lena also expressed deep gratitude for Taylor’s consistent support, saying she’s always there in times of need. She finished with a heartfelt declaration of love, both for the reasons everyone else loves Taylor, and for deeply personal reasons of her own.

Taylor has frequently spoken about how much her friendship with Lena—who was in a relationship with her producer Jack Antonoff from 2012 to 2018—has influenced her, even helping her understand and embrace feminist ideas.

Taylor explained to The Guardian in 2014 that feminism has often been wrongly portrayed as being against men. She realized she’d been quietly supporting feminist ideas for a while, but hadn’t explicitly identified with the movement until she became friends with Lena Dunham. Seeing Dunham’s perspective – understanding her beliefs and values without being lectured – helped Taylor recognize her own unspoken feminist views.

Taylor and Lena have been friends for a long time, but they’re not the only famous best friends out there. Here are some other iconic celebrity friendships…

Nicole, who has always enjoyed her sister-in-law’s films, asked her a few years ago if she’d recreate some memorable scenes, including a famous one from My Best Friend’s Wedding.

During a May 2024 appearance on the Everything Iconic with Danny Pellegrino podcast, she recounted telling Cameron, ‘I need you to run towards me from behind the luggage cart, towards the airport.’ She explained that she started directing Cameron, telling her exactly what to say while they were driving. She added that Cameron was incredibly accommodating and willingly followed her instructions, which she greatly appreciated.

Thankfully, Lawrence was free to spend time with Schumer, otherwise we might have missed out on seeing one of our favorite friendships blossom. It all started when the Oscar-winning Lawrence emailed Schumer after watching her 2015 movie, Trainwreck. “I told her, ‘I don’t even know where to begin. I think I should just say it: I’m in love with you,'” Lawrence remembered in an interview with The New York Times. They began emailing each other, which quickly turned into texting.

Their friendship really took off when Schumer casually invited Lawrence to join her and her high school friends for a trip to the Hamptons. Schumer was surprised when Lawrence accepted, but quickly realized Lawrence was “the coolest person you’ll ever meet,” she shared on The Daily Show. “She’s so easy to hang out with, she fit right in with the group.”

Everyone would want a friend who’s successful enough to own property nearby! Jennifer Lopez and Leah Remini have been incredibly close ever since they met and instantly connected at the premiere of Man on Fire in 2004. Lopez described it as an immediate and effortless chemistry – someone who makes you laugh and who you just love being around.

Remini was also enthusiastically cheering on Lopez when she performed at President Joe Biden’s inauguration. She told TopMob News she messaged Lopez, reminding her of her Bronx roots and saying the performance was truly inspiring and beautiful to watch.

Oh my gosh, can we talk about Jennifer, Courteney, and Lisa? Seriously, they’re the ultimate friend group! I’ve been following them forever, and it’s just so amazing to see how close they still are. It all started way back when they were filming Friends – basically, they grew up together on that set, went through everything together, and it totally bonded them! It’s like how you stay in touch with people from your first job, you know? They make time for each other. Apparently, they’re always at Courteney’s for Sunday dinner or hanging out at Jen’s pool. A little bird told me they really feel like family and always will be, and honestly, it just warms my heart!

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have been incredibly close friends ever since they met in an improv class in 1993, and they often describe their relationship as sisterly. Poehler, who has one younger brother named Greg, told PopSugar while promoting their 2015 movie Sisters that she and Fey are like the family she always wanted. She explained that their bond has allowed her to experience a kind of familial connection she hadn’t had before.

You know how people talk about love at first sight? That’s exactly what happened with Josh and I when we first met on the Dawson’s Creek set. We just clicked – an instant connection. It was effortless, like immediately wanting to hang out, drink wine, maybe even get into a little trouble! We had this immediate affection for each other, and thankfully, it’s only grown stronger over the years. And honestly, as a fan, it’s been amazing to watch our relationship unfold – from red carpet appearances to matching outfits, and even those perfect pink hair moments with Josh. It feels like we’re getting a little peek into their beautiful life together.

Drake and Adele, despite only recently considering a partnership, seem eager to work together. After years of admiring each other’s music – they’ve won a combined 19 Grammy Awards – they started talking about a possible collaboration. Adele mentioned to Canada’s etalk that she’d love to create an official remix with Drake, adding that she’s a big fan and even bought the red coat he wore in his music video. Drake playfully responded by saying he’d do anything for Adele, even household chores! Instead of immediately recording, they chose to hang out, grabbing a meal and going bowling. Perhaps their collaboration will be announced soon – you can expect to hear from them!

After receiving wonderful support from other women during her pregnancies, Washington has always made an effort to offer the same to her celebrity friends. She told Entertainment Tonight that she tries to have open and honest conversations, especially with Eva Longoria. Longoria greatly appreciated Washington’s advice when she welcomed her son, Santiago, in 2018, playfully referring to Washington as “basically my doula.”

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who famously won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting over 20 years ago, have teamed up again for the film The Last Duel. Despite not working together on screen for a while, their close friendship remains strong. Damon explained to Entertainment Tonight that they’ve known each other for 35 years and grew up together, sharing a mutual passion for acting and filmmaking. He believes this shared obsession during their younger years created a lifelong bond.

The friendship between two prominent television personalities began in 1976 while they worked at a Baltimore station. Although Oprah Winfrey was an anchor and Gayle King a production assistant, and they didn’t typically socialize due to the newsroom’s structure, a snowstorm brought them closer. Oprah invited Gayle, who earned $12,000 a year as a PA, to stay at her house. The next day, they went shopping together at the mall, and a lasting friendship blossomed over sweaters at Casual Corner.

While your dates probably don’t involve watching a friend compete in major tennis championships or visiting a palace, Meghan Markle and the tennis star actually connected in a very relatable way—through casual conversation. Meghan wrote on her now-defunct website, The Tig, that they immediately bonded at a 2014 Super Bowl event. They spent time taking pictures, laughing during a flag football game, and chatting about everyday things—not tennis or acting, but typical ‘girly’ topics.

Even though Game of Thrones is over, the close bond between Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams remains strong. Williams, who was a bridesmaid at Turner’s wedding to Joe Jonas in 2019, believes the most valuable outcome of the show’s eight seasons wasn’t its 12 Emmy Awards. She jokingly told TopMob News at the final season premiere that the show felt like an elaborate plan to help her find a best friend. “It’s been incredible,” she added, “and having a friend like Sophie during something as crazy as Game of Thrones has been a true blessing.”

Everyone’s heart probably melted watching Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s adorable reaction when their oldest daughter, James, recognized Taylor Swift’s song “Gorgeous” at a concert. Lively jokingly called the viral video embarrassing, telling Robin Roberts on Good Morning America it showed their “unfiltered, over-the-top pride” as stage parents. But their genuine friendship – built on years of celebrating the Fourth of July at Swift’s Rhode Island home, spending time at Reynolds and Lively’s country house, and even appearing in Swift’s music videos – is something special and should be cherished.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon have a friendship that goes way back, even before their Apple TV+ series, The Morning Show. They first worked together in 2000, playing sisters on an NBC show. Witherspoon, who had recently given birth to her daughter Ava Phillippe, remembers being 23 and still nursing her baby on set. She was surprised when Aniston kept asking about it, jokingly acknowledging how unusual it was. Witherspoon recalls Aniston asking where she was going, to which she’d reply, “I’m pumping!” Despite feeling a little awkward, Witherspoon said Aniston was incredibly kind, and they’ve been close friends ever since.

Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg formed an unlikely but captivating friendship that first became public at Justin Bieber’s Comedy Central Roast in 2015. They later starred together on the VH1 cooking show, Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Snoop Dogg explained to LA Weekly that Martha Stewart, though different from people he usually hangs out with, feels surprisingly familiar. He appreciates that she’s genuine and down-to-earth, despite coming from a different generation. He described their connection as feeling like a true partnership, a kind of “holy matrimony,” not just a casual friendship.
