Even though Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone is a tough act to follow, Netflix’s new Western series has something the popular show didn’t. Yellowstone was a huge success for Paramount Network, and while Sheridan’s films have had varying degrees of success – with hits like Wind River and Sicario alongside less successful films like Finestkind and Those Who Wish Me Dead – Yellowstone remains Paramount’s biggest streaming hit, closely followed by its prequel series, 1883 and 1923.
Though Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923 have finished their runs, the Dutton Ranch spinoff and CBS’s Marshals ensure the franchise will continue through 2026. Taylor Sheridan’s other Paramount series, The Madison, has been renewed for two more seasons, even with lukewarm initial reviews, proving he’s a powerful figure in television. However, other streaming services could certainly try to replicate his success – and might even surpass it.
Look, a lot of shows have tried to capture the magic of Yellowstone with a modern Western twist, but none have really hit the mark. However, Netflix’s Ransom Canyon might be different. What sets it apart? It’s based on a huge series of romance novels by Jodi Thomas – eleven books, to be exact! That’s a lot of story to work with, and if Netflix’s other adaptations are anything to go by, Ransom Canyon won’t be running out of material anytime soon. It’s a solid foundation that other shows just haven’t had.
There Are Eleven Books In The Series Netflix’s Ransom Canyon Is Based On
The Ransom Canyon series started in 2015 with the popular novel Ransom Canyon by Thomas. Shortly after, a short story called Winter’s Camp was released as part 1.5 in the series due to its shorter length of 108 pages. Over the following decade, the series grew with the addition of Rustler’s Moon, Lone Heart Pass, and Sunrise Crossing (all released in 2016), followed by Wild Horse Springs and Indigo Lake in 2017, Mistletoe Miracles in 2018, and Christmas in Winter Valley in 2019.
The series continued to grow with the addition of the 2025 prequel, Silverleaf Rapids, and the 2017 novella, A Christmas Affair, bringing the total to eleven books—eight novels and three shorter stories. However, this is just a small part of author Robyn Thomas’s extensive work. She’s also written several other popular series, including the nine-book Harmony series, the five-book McLain series, the seven-book Whispering Mountain series, and the ten-book Historical series, plus many other titles.
Considering the success of other romance novel adaptations on Netflix, like Virgin River, the new series Ransom Canyon has the potential to run for many seasons, possibly even longer than Taylor Sheridan’s Western dramas. While Virgin River, based on Robyn Carr’s books, isn’t as widely known as a hit like Stranger Things, it quietly became Netflix’s longest-running original series when it was renewed for a eighth season, scheduled for 2026.
Netflix’s Yellowstone Replacement Has One Thing Taylor Sheridan’s Show Was Always Missing
Despite not being a typical headline-grabbing hit like some other Netflix shows, Virgin River has consistently proven popular and made a real impact on the streaming service. This success is similar to the Yellowstone franchise, which, despite mixed reviews, continues to draw a large audience even after its first season. Like many shows created by Taylor Sheridan, including Ransom Canyon and Virgin River, critical acclaim isn’t necessarily required for these shows to thrive.
While it’s easy to compare the two, viewers shouldn’t mistake Yellowstone for Deadwood. The show often presented a rough and morally complex world, but it frequently favored and excused the actions of the Dutton family. Though Yellowstone wasn’t as relentlessly dark or brutal as Westerns like The Proposition or Bone Tomahawk, it still offered more grit and violence than Netflix’s adaptation of Thomas.
Compared to Yellowstone, Ransom Canyon feels lighter and more optimistic, likely because it’s based on popular romance novels. While the Kirkland family does face conflicts with rivals trying to take their land, the show maintains a more hopeful feel than Yellowstone‘s often bleak outlook. This similar, feel-good approach is also a key reason why Virgin River has become so popular with viewers around the world.
Ransom Canyon Season 2 Breaks A Netflix Western Trend
When Ransom Canyon premiered on Netflix in April 2025, critics were mostly amused by it. While Rotten Tomatoes gave the series an average score of 45%, many reviewers called it a melodramatic Western similar to shows like Dynasty and Dallas – overlooking how popular those shows actually were in the 1980s. As expected, the series was renewed for a second season, proving it had attracted a significant audience.
As a huge Western fan, I was really excited to see Netflix finally stick with a series in the genre! Unlike shows like Godless, The Abandons, and American Primeval – which critics seemed to like more – this one actually got a second season. It’s interesting because American Primeval was always meant to be just one season, much like Stranger Things originally was. But Netflix clearly isn’t afraid to bring back a hit show for more, even if they initially planned for it to be a limited series. It gives me hope we’ll see more Westerns on the platform!
The cast of The Abandons included well-known actors like Gillian Anderson from Sex Education, Lena Headey of Game of Thrones, Aisling Franciosi from The Fall, and Michiel Huisman of The Haunting of Hill House. This suggested the show had a larger budget than the first season of Ransom Canyon, which starred Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly. Despite this, viewers seemed to connect more with Ransom Canyon‘s optimistic take on the Western genre.
As a fan, I’m thrilled Ransom Canyon got a second season! It really shows the show has the potential to stick around on Netflix for a while, especially seeing how well Virgin River did. For a long time, everyone thought Yellowstone‘s success was a one-off, something no other streaming service could replicate. But Ransom Canyon proves that might not be true, as long as it keeps delivering that feel-good, small-town Western vibe.
