M. Night Shyamalan says his upcoming movie, Remain, may be his strongest to date.
I’m really intrigued by this new movie, Remain. It’s about an architect dealing with some tough stuff – depression – and he moves to Cape Cod to try and find peace. That’s where things get interesting, because he meets this really mysterious woman. What’s cool is that M. Night Shyamalan teamed up with Nicholas Sparks – the guy who wrote The Notebook – to create it. They actually wrote a book to go along with the film, called Remain: A Supernatural Love Story, which came out in 2025. The movie itself is scheduled to be released on February 5th, 2027, and I’m already planning to check it out!
At a recent Warner Bros. Discovery advertising event, director M. Night Shyamalan talked about his next film, Remain. He shared that it has received the best test audience scores of any movie he’s ever made. The thriller features Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Julie Hagerty, though details about Hagerty’s character weren’t yet available.
Shyamalan explained that he and Sparks started working on Remain by focusing on what genuinely scares people emotionally. They combined their skills and unique approaches to storytelling, resulting in a romantic thriller with supernatural elements. Instead of directly adapting each other’s work, they each decided to tell the same story – Shyamalan through film, and Sparks through a novel.
M. Night Shyamalan revealed the film is currently being finalized after shooting. He expressed his hope that audiences will be drawn in by the love story and also feel a persistent sense of unease while watching.
M. Night Shyamalan is a filmmaker famous for his complex horror movies. His films often include subtle clues and build to surprising plot twists. Many consider The Sixth Sense, featuring Bruce Willis and Haley Joel Osment, to be his biggest hit.
In The Sixth Sense, child psychologist Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) tries to help a young boy named Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) who says he can see and talk to ghosts. As Malcolm investigates Cole’s frightening claims, the movie slowly reveals a shocking twist: Malcolm himself has been a ghost since the beginning, having been killed by a previous patient.
Following the film’s release, director Shyamalan highlighted several subtle clues suggesting Bruce Willis’ character was a ghost. He noted that only Cole ever directly spoke to him. Throughout scenes where Malcolm interacted with his wife or Cole’s mother, they never acknowledged him or had any interaction with him at all.
Remain will release in theaters on February 5, 2027.
