Tonight, fifteen countries will perform, all competing for ten spots in Saturday’s grand final.
Last year, Malta’s Eurovision entry, performed by Miriana Conte, had a rocky start with some controversy surrounding its original song title, which was later altered. Although she reached the grand final, Malta didn’t place very high. Could this year finally bring them a better result?

As a big fan of Eurovision, I’ve been really troubled by the controversy surrounding Israel’s participation this year, given everything that’s happening in Gaza. It’s sparked a lot of debate and criticism, and honestly, it’s been hard to enjoy the build-up to the contest knowing the situation.
Several countries are choosing not to participate in this year’s contest because the organization in charge, the European Broadcasting Union, decided against banning Israel from competing.
In December 2025, the EBU held a meeting where members voted to establish rules preventing governments or outside groups from unfairly boosting songs to sway voting results. However, they did not vote on whether Israel would be allowed to participate.
The EBU announced that most of its members decided another vote on participation wasn’t necessary, and the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest will go ahead as scheduled, with extra safety measures added.
After that announcement, Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland all stated they would not be competing in Eurovision this year.
As a longtime fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, I was really saddened to hear RTÉ’s decision regarding Ireland’s participation this year. They felt it just wasn’t right to participate given the terrible situation in Gaza – the loss of life and the ongoing humanitarian crisis are just devastating, and they believe continuing with the contest would be insensitive given the risk to so many civilians.
The BBC, the UK broadcaster for the competition, backs the EBU’s decision. In a statement, they explained it’s about upholding the competition’s rules and ensuring everyone feels welcome.
The Eurovision Song Contest 2026 final will take place on Saturday 16 May 2026.
