I’m so excited! A series that originally launched way back in 1988 on the NES is finally getting a new game this August! It’s coming to Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, which is awesome. The release date depends on where you are – it’s August 27th in Japan, and the 28th everywhere else. Sadly, it doesn’t look like it’ll be coming to the older PS4 and Xbox One consoles, or a future Switch 2, at least not yet.
The popular manga and anime series Captain Tsubasa first appeared in 1981 and has remained active for nearly 40 years. The first video game adaptation, Captain Tsubasa for the NES, came out in 1988. More recently, Tamsoft and Bandai Namco released Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions in 2020, followed by the mobile game Captain Tsubasa: Ace in 2023. Now, the team is releasing a sequel to Rise of New Champions. Captain Tsubasa II: World Fighters will launch in August on consoles and PC for $60.
“Peak Cinema”
It’s no surprise fans are thrilled about the series’ return after six years. Many new players in the 2020s likely didn’t experience the original in the 1980s, but the excitement is still clear. The trailer’s impressive like-to-dislike ratio – with over 3,000 likes for every dislike – and the enthusiastic comments prove it.
The trailer is generating a lot of excitement, with one popular comment calling it “peak cinema.” Many viewers are expressing intense anticipation, and feel like a beloved era is returning.
It’s important to remember this isn’t a brand new series, but a continuation of an existing one. This suggests the series is doing well and likely to continue beyond this current release. If it were a long-awaited return, there would be more uncertainty about its success and future installments.
