Casey Hudson, the game director for the upcoming Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, recently shared some updates in an interview with Bloomberg. He confirmed the game is still on track for release before 2030, and indicated the development team is aiming for a faster turnaround than five to seven years. Hudson also stated they are deliberately avoiding the use of generative AI in the game, describing it as lacking creative depth and not beneficial to their process.
The upcoming game, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, won’t be overly lengthy. As explained by Hudson, a shorter experience can be more appealing. He believes a game that takes 200 hours to complete can be daunting, and players often prefer something they can start and finish in a reasonable amount of time – perhaps around 20 hours – without feeling stuck in the first section.
During a recent interview, Simon Zhu, a former executive at NetEase, shared that his new company, GreaterThan Group, is funding this project. He stated that GreaterThan Group has already raised $40 million and secured commitments for an additional $60 million to support interesting game development. While he kept the investors’ names confidential, Zhu described them as “very successful individuals” in the gaming and technology industries.
Zhu explained his desire to start a video game investment company stems from the fact that major tech companies have shifted their focus – and their money – away from gaming and towards newer technologies like artificial intelligence. He noted, “Large tech companies pulled out, and the investment capital followed. Now, everyone is investing in AI.”
Zhu explained that game developers don’t have to choose between player enjoyment, financial success, and artistic merit. They can achieve all three without compromise. By supporting talented creators and letting them pursue their vision, everyone benefits.
Despite the challenges, the industry is beginning to grow again, and customers have remained surprisingly stable compared to other markets.
He explained that it wasn’t just about being profitable. The goal was to prove they could be successful financially while also providing enjoyable and ethical entertainment for audiences.
I’m really excited to hear that GreaterThan Group is backing BulletFarm on a new shooter! It’s awesome that David Vonderhaar, who used to work on Call of Duty at Treyarch, is leading the studio. He’s said this new game won’t be anything like Call of Duty – he’s aiming for something really different, describing it as what a David Lynch-directed shooter would be like. He’s also made it clear they aren’t trying to compete with Call of Duty at all, which is a cool approach.
While fans await more news, Arcanaut Studios, the team behind Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is expanding. They’re hiring experienced developers who have worked on popular games like Mass Effect and the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
