Adam Sandler has made several movie sequels throughout his career. His recent film, Happy Gilmore 2, was a big success on Netflix. While he’s done follow-up movies before, he hasn’t yet created a film series with three movies—except for the Hotel Transylvania films where he provides the voice for Dracula. But that’s about to change, as Sandler is bringing back one of his popular comedies from the 2010s for another installment.
Netflix confirmed that a third Grown Ups movie is in the works. Adam Sandler and Tim Herlihy, who often work together, are writing the screenplay. Kyle Newacheck, known for directing Happy Gilmore 2, will direct the film. Details about who will star in the movie and when it will be released haven’t been announced yet.
Grown Ups 3 Continues Adam Sandler’s Dominant Netflix Run

Adam Sandler was a huge movie star in the 1990s and early 2000s, but he shifted his career focus around 2015. He partnered with Netflix, and that move has been very successful. Over the last eleven years, he’s made and starred in numerous films for the streaming service, finding a good fit for his comedic style. Some of his popular Netflix projects include Happy Gilmore 2, the Murder Mystery series, and the animated movie Leo. He’s also used his deal with Netflix to explore more serious roles, like in the basketball drama Hustle.
I’ve been a big fan of Adam Sandler’s work with Netflix for years, and it just makes sense to me that Grown Ups 3 would end up there. So much has changed since Grown Ups 2 came out in 2013! While silly comedies are trying to make a comeback, the old-fashioned studio comedy isn’t as popular anymore. Plus, let’s be honest, the Grown Ups movies haven’t exactly been critical darlings, and we’re all used to watching Sandler’s new comedies from the comfort of our homes now. I think a big theatrical release would just get lost in the shuffle. I’m really hoping it does well as a Netflix original, maybe even like Happy Gilmore 2 did!
While the cast hasn’t been officially announced yet, it’s likely Adam Sandler will star in Grown Ups 3 alongside his frequent co-stars Kevin James, Chris Rock, and David Spade, who were both in the previous two films. The chemistry between these friends is the biggest draw of the Grown Ups movies. It remains to be seen if Rob Schneider will return, as he was in the first film but couldn’t participate in the second due to other commitments.
While Happy Gilmore 2 proved Adam Sandler can still lead a comedy, he’s also been increasingly open to playing supporting roles. Roommates largely features his daughter, Sadie Sandler, with Adam taking a smaller on-screen part but heavily involved as a producer. He also received praise for his supporting role in the dramedy Jay Kelly. Grown Ups 3 will likely follow the formula of Happy Gilmore 2, starring Sandler and his friends, but the story might also introduce their children as central characters. This could allow Netflix to continue the franchise with a new cast in the future.
