Will Smith Makes Acting Return in Action Thriller Supermax

Following his role in Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Will Smith is returning to the big screen. He’s signed on to star in Supermax, a new action thriller directed by David Gordon Green, who is known for his work on the Halloween films.

The upcoming series Supermax follows two FBI agents as they investigate a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Jon Hamm has been cast as one of the agents, and producers are currently searching for an actress to play his partner. Filming is expected to start in mid-August.

Amazon Has Already Acquired Supermax

As a movie fan, I just heard some interesting news! Amazon MGM Studios has picked up the rights to Supermax, a new thriller that was originally with Miramax. Apparently, they paid around $70 million for it. Now, even though Will Smith is still a big name, it sounds like this one is heading straight to streaming – probably Amazon Prime Video – instead of getting a release in theaters. It’s a bit of a shift, but I’m still curious to see what they do with it.

Supermax brings director Gordon Green back to work with Amazon. He previously directed five episodes of an unnamed series for them. Green is also known for directing the recent Halloween trilogy, The Exorcist: Believer, and Nutcrackers. Supermax is projected to be his most expensive film yet.

David Weil and David J. Rosen, the team behind the script for Supermax, have a history with Amazon. Weil previously created Hunters, a conspiracy drama starring Logan Lerman and Al Pacino for Prime Video, and Rosen contributed as a writer on that series.

Supermax Will Be the First of Many New Will Smith Movies

Filming for Supermax will begin in August, making it the first of several movies starring Smith to get underway. Two more projects, Sugar Bandits and Rabbit Hole, are also planned with Paramount, which has a deal with Smith and his production company, Westbrook, to be the first to develop them.

I’m really excited about this new project, Sugar Bandits! It’s based on a great book by Chuck Hogan called Devils in Exile, and from what I understand, it’s going to be a gritty action thriller about an ex-Special Forces guy who’s decided to take the fight to drug dealers in Boston with his own team. Plus, Jon Spaihts, who wrote the screenplay for Dune, is writing Rabbit Hole – though they’re keeping the details of that one under wraps for now.

Will Smith is also working on an action movie for Netflix called Fast and Loose. Originally, the film was set to be directed by Michael Bay, who previously worked with Smith on Bad Boys. However, Bay left the project last August due to disagreements about the creative direction.

The upcoming film, Fast and Loose, features Smith as a man who finds himself in Tijuana with amnesia. While trying to remember who he is, he discovers he’s been leading a double life – as both a powerful criminal and a secret CIA operative.

Will Smith is considering revisiting some of his past successful films with new sequels. Sony is developing another Men in Black movie, and Chris Bremner is writing the script. Smith will be among the first to review it, and the studio hopes he approves the direction it takes.
