Emmerdale confirms Tate and Sugden families to grow with two mysterious new arrivals

Emmerdale fans can expect some exciting news for the Tate and Sugden families, as they’re both set to grow, according to producer Laura Shaw.

Some of the original families from the long-running ITV soap opera, those who’ve been featured since the show began in 1972 and 1989, have become less prominent in recent years.

Kim Tate and her step-grandson Joe currently control Home Farm, and Robert Sugden runs Emmerdale Farm. However, neither family has as many members as the much larger and more chaotic Dingle family.

Naturally, the main characters all have family, adding to the village dynamic. We see the Tates connected to Dawn Fletcher (Olivia Bromley) and her many children, and Robert’s niece, Sarah (Katie Hill), lives in the village with her husband Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant), leaving opportunities to introduce even more characters.

Last year, I really wanted to strengthen the bonds between the families on our show,” producer Laura Shaw told Inside Soap.

People are always focused on the Dingles, but I’m really pleased with how we developed the stories and characters of other families too. That’s something I’m particularly proud of.

Shaw hasn’t revealed who the new characters are or how they’ll relate to the ones we already know.

Regarding Joe’s return to Home Farm, she explained that the storyline solidified the mother-son dynamic between Kim and Joe, which was crucial for establishing the Tate family’s presence on the farm.

We also asked Dawn and her children to help out, but then the father of the family wasn’t available, so we quickly brought Graham back to assist!

As I mentioned earlier about bringing the clans together, I’ve also been working to do the same with the Sugdens and the Tates.

As you know, Isabel is currently on maternity leave, but with Sarah now married to Jacob – and taking his last name, Sugden – I really want to focus on reminding viewers that she’s part of the Sugden family too over the next few months. It’s important to highlight that connection.

“There’s going to be a couple of arrivals to strengthen both the Tate and Sugden clans!”

The news comes as Patsy Kensit’s return to the serial as Sadie King was announced.

The actress will return to her iconic role later this year, and her return is set to create major drama for several characters, including her ex-husband Jimmy, current and former lovers Cain and Robert, and longtime rival Charity.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and from 7am on ITVX.
