The First 10 Members of the New Avengers, Ranked by Power

The New Avengers started in 2005, essentially replacing the original team that had fallen apart after a disastrous event called “Avengers Disassembled.” This event involved Scarlet Witch causing the deaths of several Avengers, leading to the team’s collapse. The new group first came together to stop a breakout at the Raft prison, and they decided to rebuild the Avengers in the wake of the original team’s disbandment. The initial lineup consisted of Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, and Luke Cage, with Sentry present but not yet a member. The team later split during the “Civil War” storyline, but eventually reunited after the Superhero Registration Act was repealed. They continued operating until Luke Cage and his wife, Jessica Jones, decided to retire.

This article explores the incredible power levels of the original ten New Avengers, from a successor to a legendary hero to a being with the force of countless suns.

10) Ronin (Echo)

When Echo joined the New Avengers, she adopted the identity of Ronin. She was the first new member to join the team after its original seven founders, debuting in New Avengers #11 (2005). Echo has the unique ability to perfectly copy any action she witnesses, similar to the villain Taskmaster. Though raised as an assassin by her adoptive father, Wilson Fisk, she chose a heroic path and distanced herself from him. While she later gained significant power from the Phoenix Force, during her time with the New Avengers, she fought as Ronin without those abilities.

9) Spider-Woman

Jessica Drew is Spider-Woman, a remarkably powerful hero known for both her superpowers and her skills as a spy. However, the Spider-Woman who initially joined the New Avengers wasn’t actually Jessica Drew. It was Veranke, the Skrull queen, disguised as Jessica as part of a long-term plan leading to the events of Secret Invasion. While Veranke possessed many of Jessica’s abilities, her powers weren’t as strong, and she also had the Skrull ability to shapeshift – though she wasn’t as powerful as Jessica or many of the original New Avengers. The real Jessica Drew eventually did join the team after Secret Invasion, but it took time for her teammates to fully trust her again.

8) Iron Fist

Danny Rand is known as Iron Fist. He became the ninth member of the New Avengers in 2007, joining with issue #27. He earned the title of Iron Fist by defeating Shou-Lao the Undying in the hidden city of K’un-Lun, a battle that left him with a dragon-shaped scar on his chest. Iron Fist focuses his inner energy, or ‘chi,’ into his fist, allowing him to break incredibly strong materials like steel and concrete. He can also use this chi to heal both his own injuries and those of others. His attacks are more powerful than those of both a Skrull imposter and Ronin, as his chi significantly amplifies the force of his strikes.

7) Luke Cage

Luke Cage was one of the original New Avengers, and he played a key role in bringing both Iron Fist and, eventually, his wife Jessica Jones onto the team. With his incredibly durable, unbreakable skin and immense strength – gained from experiments during his time at Seagate Prison – he continues to be the team’s strongest fighter and first line of attack. He also heals quickly, and his power allows him to deliver even more impactful blows than Iron Fist. While both Luke and Danny are skilled fighters, Luke excels at taking hits, while Danny is more likely to be injured during a fight.

6) Spider-Man

Spider-Man was an original member of the New Avengers, which was unusual for him as he typically worked alone. Adding Spider-Man—along with Wolverine—to the team boosted comic book sales because they were two of Marvel’s most popular characters. Spider-Man possesses incredible strength, speed, and a “spider-sense” that warns him of danger. While he’s similar in power to Luke Cage, Spider-Man’s ability to dodge attacks with his spider-sense, combined with his largely untapped strength, makes him the more powerful hero.

5) Captain America

Although Luke Cage and Spider-Man are physically stronger than Captain America, he’s a more skilled and strategic fighter. Captain America possesses enhanced strength, speed, endurance, reflexes, and healing, allowing him to go toe-to-toe with Cage and outlast Spider-Man in a longer fight. Plus, his incredibly durable shield serves as both a powerful weapon and an excellent defense. Captain America is one of the best tacticians in the Marvel universe, rivaled perhaps only by Cyclops in terms of strategic thinking.

4) Wolverine

Wolverine and Captain America are evenly matched in terms of strength, but Wolverine has a key advantage: his incredibly fast healing. This allows him to recover and rejoin a fight much quicker than Captain America when injured. Wolverine joined the New Avengers as their seventh member and is considered a founding member, first appearing in issue #6 of the New Avengers comic. Beyond his healing ability, his skeleton is bonded with the nearly indestructible metal adamantium, and he possesses retractable claws also laced with adamantium, capable of cutting through almost any material. He’s also unique among the New Avengers in his willingness to kill when necessary, making him a truly unstoppable force in battle.

3) Iron Man

Iron Man was one of the original New Avengers, appearing with them from the very beginning. He’s an incredibly intelligent inventor who has built numerous suits of armor for any challenge. Most of these suits let him fly, fire energy blasts, launch missiles, create protective shields, and survive in harsh environments. He even has specialized armor like the Hulk-Buster, designed to fight the Hulk, and suits that allow him to operate in space or underwater. While his ability to fly and powerful weapons give him an edge over heroes like Wolverine, Iron Man might struggle in a close-quarters fight.

2) Doctor Strange

During his time with the New Avengers, Doctor Strange held the title of Sorcerer Supreme, making him Earth’s most powerful magic user. He joined the team in New Avengers #27 (2007) alongside Iron Fist, bringing a unique mystical strength no other member possessed. Beyond the team, Doctor Strange was considered one of the planet’s most powerful superheroes. While Iron Man relies on advanced technology, Strange’s magic surpasses even the most sophisticated tech, giving him the power to overcome nearly any hero or villain in the Marvel Universe.

1) Sentry

Sentry is undeniably the most powerful member of the New Avengers, surpassing all others. Though Doctor Strange is a master of magic, Sentry’s abilities, when he’s mentally stable and at full strength, have no equal. He joined the team in issues 7-10 of New Avengers and immediately became their heaviest hitter. Powered by the Golden Sentry Serum – which is even more potent than the one that created Captain America – Robert Reynolds possesses incredible strength, often described as the power of a million exploding suns. He’s one of the very few beings capable of going toe-to-toe with a fully enraged Hulk, and simply put, no one on Earth can match his level of power.
