In 2025’s Superman, James Gunn introduced several fresh characters to his revamped DC Universe. One of these newcomers references an eight-year-old enigma from The CW’s Arrow season 5. Following the 2024 animated Creature Commandos series, it was thrilling to witness some of DC Comics’ most recognized heroes and villains appear for the first time in live-action DCU in Superman. This assemblage is known as the Justice Gang, which consists of Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Kendra Saunders’ Hawkgirl, and Michael Holt’s Mister Terrific. The latter has already gained a significant following among fans for his heroic role in the film.
Edi Gathegi’s role in the Superman movie marks a comeback for him in superhero films, but Mister Terrific has been portrayed in live-action before. Echo Kellum initially played Curtis Holt, who is a tech genius, inventor, and Olympic decathlete – a version of Michael Holt – in season 4 of the CW’s Arrow back in 2015. After helping Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) and defeating Brie Larvan (Emily Kinney), closing down Rubicon, Curtis officially became part of Team Arrow in season 5. This interaction with characters from Earth-2 made him ponder about what his own counterpart might be like.
Following Superman, we now have a clear understanding of Curtis Holt’s doppelgänger, especially considering The CW’s Arrowverse is part of the DC Elseworlds project and spans the new multiverse of the revamped DC Universe. In season 5, Curtis Holt officially took on the role of Mister Terrific in Arrow, but his more dynamic personality distinguishes him from Edi Gathegi’s portrayal of the hero, who is more aligned with his comic book counterpart. Interestingly, although Kellum’s interpretation was well-liked, Gathegi’s Mister Terrific has rapidly become the preferred version among fans.
Originating from DC Comics in issue #54 of Spectre back in 1997, Michael Holt was a child prodigy who amassed 14 PhDs, made his fortune independently, and excelled as an Olympic decathlete. Following the tragic deaths of his wife and unborn child, he adopted the superhero identity of Mister Terrific. Recognized as the most intelligent member of the Justice Society of America and the third-smartest person globally, Mister Terrific relies on his intelligence and sophisticated technology to function as a superhero.
It’s unlikely that Curtis Holt foresaw the acclaim and fame of his DCU counterpart when he pondered what his alternate self would be like during Arrow season 5, episode 10 titled “Who Are You?” back in 2017. After a less-than-stellar stint as adaptable mutant Darwin in X-Men: First Class (2011), it’s refreshing to see Edi Gathegi step into the role of a powerful and pivotal superhero in Superman, and his future looks promising following his cinematic debut. If the DCU delves into its multiverse, Mister Terrific might encounter his own doppelgängers, possibly even Curtis Holt portrayed by Echo Kellum.
