As the leader of his motorcycle club, Clay was a real threat because he consistently made choices that benefited himself over the good of the group. Considering Sons of Anarchy draws heavily from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Clay functions as the show’s version of the character Claudius.

Okay, so the show really throws you for a loop when it reveals the king – Claudius, that is – murdered his own brother to steal the throne. It’s a classic setup, but then the series does something similar with John, a key player in the SAMCRO motorcycle club. Now, SAMCRO has this really rigid code they live by, but Clay, the club president, consistently proves he’s willing to bend – or completely break – those rules whenever it suits him. It’s frustrating to watch, honestly, because he’ll exploit his position to get what he wants, consequences be damned.

This is particularly clear when Clay orders Tig to kill Piney’s son, Opie, believing Opie was secretly working with the police. Playing Clay demanded an actor with a powerful presence, and Perlman delivered that, significantly enhancing the show’s quality.

Another Iconic Actor Originally Played Clay in the Sons of Anarchy Pilot

I have to admit, it’s almost impossible for me to picture anyone but Ron Perlman as Clay Morrow. But get this – the original pilot for Sons of Anarchy was actually filmed with a different actor in the role! It’s someone you’ve probably seen in other stuff over the years.

I remember Scott Glenn from movies like The Hunt for Red October and The Silence of the Lambs – a really solid character actor. Apparently, he was originally supposed to play the role, but it just didn’t quite click with Kurt Sutter or the folks at FX. They ended up reshooting all his scenes with Ron Perlman instead, which, looking back, feels like the right move for the show.

Glenn seems to have taken losing the role in stride and doesn’t seem upset about it. He enjoyed working on the pilot for Sons of Anarchy, but he explained that anything interfering with The Leftovers would have been a problem. He considered The Leftovers the best acting experience of his career.

Ron Perlman Was Perfect For the Role of Clay Morrow

It’s hard to say if Scott Glenn could have played Clay as well as Ron Perlman on Sons of Anarchy. Glenn is a very talented actor, but Perlman seemed perfectly suited for the role, given his experience and acting style.

Ron Perlman is known for playing both heroic roles, like Hellboy, and truly frightening villains – particularly in animated projects. When it came to the character of Clay, they needed an actor who could be both unpredictable and convincingly intimidating, and Perlman fit the bill perfectly.

Honestly, seeing Itzhak Perlman in that role was just amazing. He looked the part – a really powerful presence with that incredible face and voice. While Glenn Close is a fantastic actress, I really think casting Itzhak was the right choice. If they’d gone with Glenn, the whole show would have felt completely different, and not necessarily for the better, you know?

As a film buff, I always wonder ‘what if?’ with casting choices, but in this case, I really think a different actor wouldn’t have worked. The show had a very specific vibe, and the chemistry between that actor and the rest of the cast just wouldn’t have been the same as it was with Perlman. Honestly, one of the biggest reasons the show remains so popular, even years after it ended, is how brilliantly the entire cast – especially Perlman – took the source material and really made it something special. They didn’t just play the parts, they elevated them.

It’s common for actors to be replaced in TV shows and movies, and sometimes those changes work out well, while other times they don’t. For fans of Sons of Anarchy, most would agree that creator Kurt Sutter made a great choice in casting the perfect actor to play the show’s main villain.

Ron Perlman Has Starred in Several Projects Since Sons of Anarchy

Many actors find it hard to land roles after becoming famous for playing a particularly iconic character, but Ron Perlman is a clear exception. Since finishing his work on Sons of Anarchy, he’s appeared in numerous movies and TV shows – and that’s not even counting all his voice-over work!

In 2023, Ron Perlman gave fans renewed hope for a third Hellboy movie, revealing the original plan was for the films to be a trilogy.

He mentioned he’d consider reprising the role if Guillermo del Toro directed, though that’s probably not going to happen. Luckily, fans can still enjoy Perlman’s work in his many other movies and TV shows.
