Netflix’s Fantasy Mystery Dethrones Record-Shattering New Movie For No. 1 Chart Spot

Netflix’s latest fantasy mystery movie has quickly become the most popular title on the platform, surpassing a previous record-holder.

As a movie buff, I’ve been keeping up with everything on this streaming service, and they’ve had some really great releases this year! I enjoyed titles like People We Meet on Vacation, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s The Rip, War Machine with Alan Ritchson, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, that intense shark movie Thrash, Apex, and even Swapped. One of those actually broke streaming records, which was awesome. But just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, a new movie came out and quickly jumped to the number one spot!

After releasing almost a week ago, the movie Remarkably Bright Creatures has taken the top spot on Netflix, surpassing a previously record-breaking film. Directed by Olivia Newman (known for Where the Crawdads Sing), and based on Shelby Van Pelt’s 2022 novel, the story centers around an older woman who works as a cleaner and forms an unlikely friendship with a young traveler, all while being watched by a Giant Pacific octopus.

As of today, May 14th, Remarkably Bright Creatures is the most popular movie on Netflix in the United States. It’s taken the top spot from Swapped and broken the record for the biggest animated movie audience in a seven-day period, with 38.7 million views.

Currently, Remarkably Bright Creatures and Swapped are the top two books, followed by Mother’s Day, Home, Apex, Marty, Life Is Short, Pretty Woman, And So It Goes, Safe Haven, and The Proposal, which rounds out the top ten.

The film Remarkably Bright Creatures stars Sally Field, a two-time Oscar winner, and Lewis Pullman, who has been nominated for an Emmy. The cast also includes Joan Chen, Kathy Baker (a three-time Emmy winner), Beth Grant, Sofia Black-D’Elia, and Colm Meaney. Alfred Molina, a two-time Emmy nominee, provides the voice for Marcellus, an octopus character. The screenplay was written by John Whittington, known for his work on The Lego Movies and Sonic the Hedgehog.

The novel Remarkably Bright Creatures has become a hit, reaching number one on Netflix and earning positive reviews. Critics generally praise its heartwarming and emotional story, especially the performances by Sally Field and the endearing portrayal of an octopus. While some found the plot a bit predictable and overly sentimental, audiences seem to love it, giving the story a 90% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to an 81% score from critics.

It’s still uncertain how long Remarkably Bright Creatures will stay at the top of Netflix’s charts, but it’s off to a good start. It recently surpassed the streamer’s previously record-breaking film, Swapped. With a feel-good story that appeals to a broad audience, Remarkably Bright Creatures could easily remain the most-watched title for several days, or even a week.
