Although it’s easy to stick with rewatching your favorite shows like The Office or catching up on games and reality TV series such as Love Island using your Peacock subscription, don’t overlook the platform’s collection of critically-acclaimed original series. Shows such as Poker Face and the sensation Traitors have propelled the streaming service into the limelight, earning it both popularity and award recognition. However, Peacock is brimming with undiscovered gems – series that for one reason or another, haven’t yet had their time in the spotlight.
Peacock’s original series cover a wide range of genres, from spine-tingling horror to side-splitting comedies, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Here are 7 series on Peacock that you should definitely check out:
1) We Are Lady Parts
One of the initial original series, titled We Are Lady Parts, centers around Amina Hussein, a modest PhD student who unexpectedly joins an all-female Muslim punk band in the UK named Lady Parts. The humor in this series is clever, eccentric, and touching, and it reimagines what it means to be a rockstar while celebrating female friendships in a genuine, captivating way. The show seems like a spiritual successor to Bend It Like Beckham, and despite earning numerous awards and nominations overseas, it deserves the same level of adoration from American viewers.
2) Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist
Last year’s mini-series, titled “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist“, starring renowned actors like Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Don Cheadle, and Samuel L. Jackson, along with an unbelievable storyline, surprisingly didn’t generate more attention when it was initially released. The series is based on a true account of Gordon “Chicken Man” Williams’s (Hart) struggle to clear his name following allegations that he masterminded a daring heist on the night of boxer Muhammad Ali’s iconic 1970 comeback fight, and how Atlanta transformed into America’s “Black Mecca” as a result. Kevin Hart delivers an outstanding performance in the lead role, each scene showcases the raw grit and glamour specific to 1970s Atlanta, and its impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes makes “Fight Night” a must-see production.
3) The Day of the Jackal
In “The Day of the Jackal,” an expertly elusive sniper (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne) and a tireless British intelligence operative (Lashanna Lynch) engage in a sophisticated, tension-filled game of cat-and-mouse across Europe. Throughout the series, Lynch solidifies her status as a staple in English spy thrillers, while Redmayne once again demonstrates his versatility by mastering yet another genre. Despite being popular enough to secure a second season, “The Day of the Jackal” is a noteworthy addition to Peacock’s prestige lineup and an easy series to binge before its return later this year.
4) Based on a True Story
Drawing inspiration from real-life events, this smart, satirical series humorously explores our society’s fascination with true crime. Veteran TV comedians Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina portray Ava and Nathan, a married couple expecting a baby. However, when Nathan loses his job, Ava seizes the chance to capitalize on the true-crime craze by launching a podcast featuring an actual serial killer (Tom Bateman). This series, titled Based on a True Story, serves as Peacock’s self-aware, more edgy counterpart to Only Murders in the Building. Despite garnering enough attention to warrant a second season and an Emmy nomination, we’re puzzled as to why it didn’t achieve greater success on the platform.
5) Teacup
Under the guidance of horror mastermind James Wan, the television series “Teacup” brings to life Robert R. McCammon’s novel “Stinger“, weaving a chilling tale set in contemporary rural Georgia. A menacing figure in mask appears and warns the townsfolk not to cross the enigmatic blue line that marks their territory. The series skillfully combines everyday family struggles with elements of horror and science fiction, and Strahovski delivers an impressive portrayal as the increasingly troubled veterinarian Maggie.
6) Lockerbie: A Search for Truth
A historical drama featuring Colin Firth? We’re all in! In the mini-series “Lockerbie: A Search for Truth,” Colin Firth portrays Dr. Jim Swire, one of the parents who suffered the devastating loss of their child in the Pan Am Flight 103 terrorist bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland in December 1988. Over the years, Swire’s relentless quest for truth about his daughter’s fate has the potential to disrupt his life completely as he continues to delve deeper. Although it premiered earlier this year, “Lockerbie” has remained relatively unnoticed, but Firth’s exceptional portrayal of Swire and the mini-series’ surprising, heartrending plot twists are certainly worth a watch.
7) Mrs. Davis
An unexpected duo, a nun and a mischievous artificial intelligence, are brought together in a hilarious blend of science fiction and comedy by Mrs. Davis. Betty Gilpin portrays Sister Simone, a nun expelled from her convent who embarks on a quest for the Holy Grail, with an unexpected companion – her former boyfriend – to exact revenge on Mrs. Davis, a powerful AI that has control over society. Although Mrs. Davis earned a 92% Tomatometer rating, it didn’t receive approval for a second season. Still, it will be cherished as one of the most creative and insightful portrayals of the risks associated with technology in the early 21st century.
